Importance of Valve Adjustment?

i'm still learning about motors.... so don't BASH me :P

So, I've been hearing that it's important to check and adjust your valves? some even says check every 30k...

i've been reading up on "HOW To's" here and there, but I started wonder...

my car has bit over 150k... i don't think i've ever adjusted (or check in that matter) my valves...

the car runs okay, i don't feel any "weird-ness" while idle or running...

so... HOW IMPORTANT is this VALVE adjustment?

Re: Importance of Valve Adjustment?

My buddy has had a few hondas/acuras and thinks I need a valve adjustment. My car sounds 99% fine, theres just a weird sound sometimes thats hard to explain that led him to think i need the adjustment. I dont even know what the adjustment does, but i've read it's best to have a shop/honda dealer to it and its pricey...

Re: Importance of Valve Adjustment?

lucky for me, i know a tech from honda and only he touches my car. He also adjusted mine and told me an average person can do it, but chances are if you dont know what your doing, you can mess it up.

Re: Importance of Valve Adjustment?

A valve adjust can range from helpful to critical. Sometimes they can be so bad it hinders the performance operation of the car. Others it can just be maybe a little noisey. There are some tools not everyone has lying in their garage that are necessary to do it but on a Honda it is something a knowledgeable person with aptitude and common sense can perform. Others, one example being my old Toyota 3.4 liter, is a very difficult process and very tedious because they require shim rather adjustment to a valve. You tube actually has apretty darn good video for a b16 to give you an idea of what you would be up against and how it works.

Re: Importance of Valve Adjustment?

if you can hear the valves, you should check it. i went about 90k with out an adjustment... i started noticing the valve tick at about 50k. i waited another 40k to finally do it. it was bad enough i felt a difference in performance, vtec engagement, and gas mileage. my mileage went up 4-5% (pretty impressive for a valve adjustment) i can feel vtec now, and hear it. and i can actually feel an increase in power as opposed to a steady state acceleration throughout the power band.

and not to mention, i'm over due for a spark plug, cap, and rotor change.. and it's probably about time to clean the air filter too...

Re: Importance of Valve Adjustment?

only controls the clearance of opening/closing valves...not important at all...

Re: Importance of Valve Adjustment?

My gf neglected to have it done on her teggy and an exhaust valve ended up getting stuck open and then a chunk broke off. If she'd had it adjust 3k before, she would've saved 1800$ I'll post pics of the valve later, I don't have it with me at the moment

Re: Importance of Valve Adjustment?

I would do it if I were you. Well, nm let a tech do it if you do not have
much experience. I recently had my valves adjusted and wow, what a
difference. It's pretty easy.
