Full race?

Has anyone on here done a full race 5th gen yet? I'm not talking drag car, but autox and full track. The reason I'm asking is the more I take out of my car for the build, the less I want to put back in.

Now being considered:
Dash replaced with aluminum
Trunk delete (braces to replace it)
Full interior delete
All accesories deleted
Rotex blower
AEM EMS v2
Full roll cage
Tranny scatter guard
Fuel cell (gas tank delete)
NSX brakes
Sparco seats and 5-points w/bar

I should be able to shed 700-1000lbs from the lude and bring power up to 450hp/400ft-lbs.

Input?

this started out as a street car, but it's turning into an all motor drag car.

The car the work is being done to was not salvaged. It was my DD. It is the car in my J32A1 in a BB6 thread.

I'm actually trying to think of what I am going to do for my next project 5th gen. I'm thinking about finding one with no engine/tranny and doing the RHD swap and J32A2 swap on it. The RHD doesnt look like that much work really. If I had a RHD clip here now, I could probably convert it in about a day or so (granted the car is already stripped). Getting off subject though.

I just know I want a track car, and I love the 5th gen Prelude. They have amazing handling stock, what can they do with some suspension, brake, and weight distribution work?

Haha, what about brakes, gas tank/lines, pedals, gauge's, ecu, wire harness, driver seat, seat belt, battery, alternator, along with too many other things to list? lol

And yeah Blake (98vtec) is going full race now, and I believe there is another full race 5th gen over on Prelude power also, I don't think you should drop a v6 into a full race 5th gen unless you were going for a drag car, we already have bad enough weight distribution, just sleeve the h22 and build the crap out of it

depends, how much weight reduction is he tryin to do? Lol

Synergizer - if you do decide to go full race, I'll be watching your progress! When its time for a new DD I'm keeping my lude as a full project car, maybe full race/track car

Well it cant be all about weight reduction or he may as well connect 2 wheels to a card board box and drive that around because that would be about as useful as a car without a gas tank.

Re: Full race?

I don't think there is a class for a v6 prelude in either NASA or SCCA road racing. SCCA solo2 the car will most likely be classed as SMF or modified don't know what sub group of mod tho. Which is dependent on how much interior is left.

Honda challenge does not have a class for a j35.

If you want it to be a real race car, you need to look at the rules and figure out what class to be in, cause if you don't you might not fit any class.

And Honda Racing Dev. does not support "street cars".

Meaning yes you can make it a full race car, but it can only be used as a street car, open HPDE/PDX, or open time trial/hill climb.

71DSP is a full race car. He is on here sometimes and RoadRaceAutoX.com <- that is were you might want to find some information from.

Plus you are going to DD a car with a full cage. Please do not do that, or if you do wear a SA rated helmet. If you get in a accident you might hit your head on the steel roll cage and steel > head, so head gets crushed.

^^ He said this would be his full race car, so I would assume that would mean no DDing...

Re: Full race?

OMG...thats the most modified and most awesome 4g ever lol.

If you want to do a full race 5g go for it. I wouldn't want to do a 4g either. I just like the 5gs better and if your gonna dump tons of money and time into something make it something you love.

Most suggestions have been made. Pretty much just delete everything that isn't essential to the track. Might want to consider weight distribution also tho. The 5gs are pretty front heavy to begin with.

Re: Full race?

Do you know how easy it is to throw the rear end sideways in a 5th gen Prelude?

Easier than it is in a 4th gen.

Thats why 4th gens are the auto-xers.

Re: Full race?

Okay guys, before you run away with this thread...

My current build is straying away from DD luxury but will still be a DD. That being said, I will be looking for a new project in about four months. Let's call it a winter (8 months) project. Before it starts I will be doing A LOT of research on classes (thank you to that poster) control, weight distribution, braking, aerodynamics. Everything I can over-engineer, I will.

Re: Full race?

Keep in mind when you're building a race car, you're really building to a ruleset. There's no set of rules in the world that allow you to build "the perfect" car (except maybe SCCA Solo A Modified...but those are a long way from production-based!).

Probably the rule-friendliest place to road-race a Prelude is NASA Honda Challenge. The fields always seem to be full of Integras and CRXs, but several 4th gens have done quite well.

For SCCA road racing, your best bet is Improved Touring S. Go over to preludeonline.com and look up Dave Rierson (I think I spelled that right) -- runs a 5th gen out of Texas. I think he's done some Honda Challenge as well. The other choice for H23-powered 4th gens is E Production, but in dry weather it's tough to compete with Miatas, RX-7s, and Caterhams. They all fear Preludes in the wet, though!

For autocross, G Stock has new potential, since they reclassed the Cooper S. Not much space for modifications, though. DSP or ST could be fun, but the competition tends to be lighter to start with, and you can't remove much weight in those classes. I don't know that anyone's tried E Prepared -- it would look alot like an E Production road-racer -- but now you're well beyond a streetable car.

Alternatively, you could try dirt ovals -- we have a couple guys here doing that (Brent P -- speak up!). Or a stage rally car -- it's been done at least once: Honda Prelude - 4th Generation :: Racing Preludes
