dies when stoping

Few months ago, I purchased my second Prelude, a '99 SH. Had a few minor problems which has been fixed until recently. I'm not sure what it is or what's causing it to happen but almost every time I come to a stop, car dies. I noticed that if I'm in neutral before stopping, seems to help keep the car running. Started thinking it may have something to do with when my clutch is engaged. So I tested on the freeway... As soon as I stepped on the clutch car died.

I've been told to clean the throttle body which I've done and the problem still continues. Air filter's good, battery, starter, alternator... Don't have a clue what's wrong.

Any help be great! Thanks!

BTW, I don't know if this would have anything to do with it but my wheels spin when the car is jacked up...even in neutral. Doesn't spin very fast, but it shouldn't spin at all right...?

Happened to me, do a compression test and if that is bad a leak down test this happened to me and it was my rings but you could need a valve adjustment also.

piston rings

You may have a vaccum leak maby? my lude was doing this and i just adjusted my throttle cable to idle at 900-1000 instead of 700-800 now she's just fine. I personlly cant tell if im going through gas faster. But on start up the needle does idle at like 1800-2000 for a while.... witch is kinda annoying. So its only a temperaray fix

Mine idles at a 1000 on a normal day, but lately has been slightly below and when engaging the clutch or coming to a stop is when the idle drops to about 300-400.

I suppose I could increase the idle a bit as a temporary fix.

....how do I do that?

Also found the link below but there's no update if cleaning the TB and IACV fix the problem.

Car Dies When I Hit The Clutch

If someone could please post a step by step instruction or tutorial on how to properly clean the TB and IACV of a 5th Gen would be helpful.

I need this fix ASAP. Been pulled over once for this already.

Re: dies when stoping

If you car is burning oil thats a sign your rings are bad, I second the idea to do a compression test, that will give you a good idea about what might be going on and that narrows down the possibilities of what is going wrong, I say figure out if you can do the work yourself once you find the problem or if you have to have a shop do it. Then figure out the cost and stack that up vs a low mileage engine.

btw where are you from in the 209? I'm from stockton

Re: dies when stoping

make sure your timing is right on as well, if not good luck. I had the same issue and it was because my timing was off. Eventually the motor blew.

Re: dies when stoping

Just do the compression test so you know if it is that then worry about moving on to other things, if you even have to.

Re: dies when stoping

adjust the idle screw and clean out your iacv. might be as simple as that. My rings have been bad for about 130k miles and burns about 5 quarts of oil for every change. Well i change the filter, not the oil :)
