1998 Honda Prelude VTiR problem when starting

Hi there,

I am a proud owner of the above mentioned car in South Africa. I just bought one of these beauts and they are damn rare here (haven't seen one in Johannesburg at all)

No I bought is second hand with 89k on the clock, exterior and interior immac. and just had its 90k service.

I started it over 3 times no issue, drove it for about 45km's and parked at a shopping center, windows down, roof open - generally playing around with my new ride.

Closed everything and wanted to start her, and no go. Now to put this in clearer terms, I bought an auto (I know - don't curse - had to buy this one, it was just too well kept) so started in N with foot on brake, turned the key and started to crank - nothing, just my ABS light that was on and a green key flashing.

So I tried this 5 or 6 times, putting on my safety belt JUST incase - still no luck.

Got out the car, rechecked that all was okay and closed, switched off all lights incase, put the key in again and started.

This time it took no problem. Have started it 6 or 7 times since. What did I do wrong the other time? Please point me in the right direction.

Also I did not receive an immob device. Only 3 keys, 1 red, 2 black. Any ideas? They are all the same keys to me?

Take care and thank you in advance.

I've been googling a little and came across a thing called and inhibitor switch that is specific to auto's? What exactly is this and do you think it could be the problem? Also I am not sure how costly this part is or where it goes?

2 keys are for the car, 1 key is for the valet.

I dunno, it's kinda vague what you described.
I can suggest you get a new battery b/c it doesn't sound like a main relay/fuel problem, or it could be.

Try this:
Turn the key in the, "on" position.
Listen...listen if you can hear a "Hiss" and "click." If you hear that then the main relay is fine.

And for autos, it's always wise to depress the brake pedal to start the car, even in "PARK."

good luck...let us know more...

Prelude13 >

The main relay does not click or hiss, but even so the car starts first time without an issue. Since the last incident the car has started first time every time :) But I do know there was an issue and it will recur in future.

As for brakes while in park to start, this is my first auto but I did do that thinking that there is no other way to start an auto, always brake regardless of P or N. I always start in Park with foot firmly on the brakes.

What is the difference between the 2 black keys and the red Valet key? Keen to know a bit more.

-havok- >

Not sure if it is the immob. I never got a immob. with this car but I do see a place next to the ign. key that allows for a stick like key to be inserted (3 contact points/pins)

Any 5th gen prelude is fairly rare this side, especially the one I have, it's in great condition and still very new (9 years later hey). Will post up some pics as soon as possible.

Anyone >

I never got an owners manual for the car so not sure about one the items on the drivers side control panel above the electric windows switch (driver and passenger). There is a switch that just says On with red colouring and then black in the off possition. What is this for? It is below the electric mirror controls. I was guessing defogger? heating the rear window elements?

If anyone has a pdf of the drivers manual please holla back.

Hi T.E.L.

There is no sound of cranking, it's as if the immob. of the car was on. The strange thing is, I opened my door, walked around the car, climbed in again and it started?

Very strange symptoms. Hasn't happened again though. Just worried the next time it does I am stuck in the middle of no where :P

PS: Anyone with an owners manual or link, please forward. Thanks in advance.

Nclette > Thanks for the link :) Unfortunately I am looking for an owners manual, as in what features the car has, how to use them, what certain warnings mean, what buttons do etc. etc. Thank you for your help anyway, resource on this site and that one for repairs will definitely come it handy.

cardinalsfan > So happy that I am not the only one :) So you reckon you've managed to come right over the years then. Look at a push i'd need a tow in, do have a second car so there is always a plan B. I am still sure it is the inhibitor switch. When I find a replacement and repair shop i'll take a chance and change it anyway, will be sure to post up the outcome (may be in months though :P)

I don't have permission to post pics of the car yet, need to make 15 posts first :) Hang in there.

Ciao

Okay...I'm goin with a long shot here. I had a Legend that would take like three times of inserting the key to get it going. I called around and looked up some info. Here's what I got. The legend ignition cylinder was made with a lead "cap" on the inside of the cylinder that the very tip of the key had to depress in order for the car to start. If the "cap" was worn or dented, the key could'nt depress it and the car wouldn't start. I talked to a key maker and he said he could make a key with a bit longer tip to protrude into the "cap" so it would start. Problem Solved. It might be the same for yer car, I dunno. Try pressing the key in further than normal or spend the money to have a key made with a longer tip. ??? just a suggestion.

I'll give this a shot mate, sounds possible and the cheapest item to test with. I heard something of taking the red key with me to make a cut for the vehicle - not sure how true this is.

I also worked out what the on / off button under the electric mirror control was, just a switch whether the passenger could use the window controls their side, no big deal :P

I've got a knock at the back when going over bumps so that is the next thing I want checked out. May be shocks although they do seem fine when I tested 'em for bounce. Will see what's what this weekend.

How you guys doing for fuel economy? I seem to have done around 180km's on half a tank, not sure what range to expect. Sure it will be better economy than my modded Mazda, that thing drinks juice - last I checked 340km's on a 50l tank.

I get about 20-22 mpg. 16-18 when I get LFS, (lead foot syndrome). My doctor says its curable with alittle over-the-counter drug called PDV (panty-dropper vaccine) But when I told him this happens alot, he said I need to get some more often. Pun intended.
