Think of buying this prelude as a second project car....

What are the things I should look out for/ update right off the bat? I am considering it because it is a 5spd and the mileage isnt crazy. Looks clean too..

1997 HONDA PRELUDE 128K 5 Speed CLEAN/STOCK

Let me know what I should look for please because I havent had a car like this before.

Re: Think of buying this prelude as a second project car....

It looks clean and I like the color... I just want to know what to look watch out for on a prelude. So when I go look at it I can tell what is not right.

I was thinking if I could get it for like 4500 that would be a good deal. Not exceptional but good.

Re: Think of buying this prelude as a second project car....

Well you would have to go with someone else that has owns or has owned a prelude before. The first thing is to never buy the autos. they always seem to get problems. but its a manual so your good there. next thing would prob be to just check the clutch as usual with it being a manual and also check the trunk. Before I bought my prelude, i looked at a few that had water in the trunk but let it get bad enough to damage the car. Also check the oil. Vtecs are notorious for leaks :/
but dont let that scare you. I promise you would be pleased with it. And especially since you want it for a project.

Re: Think of buying this prelude as a second project car....

Haha well do a compression test because 5th gens are known for having bad rings, look under it for oil spots to see if there are any oil leaks, make sure the CEL turns on when you turn on the car so they didn't tape over it or take out the bulb. Um there are plenty of other things but I am just drawing blanks right now lol. Make sure the timing belt has been done or it is definitely time to do that.

Re: Think of buying this prelude as a second project car....

Haha thanks looks like a real nice car, thought of a something else, you may want to check the trunk to see if there is any rust under the spare tire because lots of times there are leaks in the trunk

Is it leaks due to the spoiler or just that it happens sometimes?

It is usually 1 of 2 things, either the tail light seals, or the drain pipes for the sun roof.

So do I need to look at the light seals after I get it and also check trunk and drain plugs? Just to make sure everything is good to go

I was doing a little more research and I see that people state that their preludes burn oil. Is that common on all of them or just ones that are not maintained?

What do you think is a proper offer for something like this prelude

Wise words my friend, just be patient and you'll definitely find the one.

Re: Think of buying this prelude as a second project car....

Lots of h22's burn oil, almost all of them its basically something you will learn to accept and move on with lol, just make sure to check your oil level a lot (like every time you fill up with gas or something).

Just check for water and or rust under the spare tire, if there isn't any rust you are good to go, replacing the seals on tail lights is suppose to be pretty easy and not very expensive so if their isn't any rust to fix then its not really a big deal.

Sounds like a good deal to me, I have always loved the lines of the 5th and 4th Gen Lude. I really would like one as a fun toy too.
