HELP! SECOND GEAR NOT SHIFTING SMOOTH

Hey guys brand new to this website. I have a 2000 prelude 5speed 160km original clutch, honda mft fluid recently changed.

My problem is when shifting from first to second gear its not smooth, its not even really a grinding but it feels like something is in the way and i have to put a bit more pressure to get it into second gear. But if I put down the clutch wait a few seconds, then go into second its perfectly fine. It seems almost like it needs some time before it will let me go into second smoothly.
Shifting from third to second is no problem. All other gears are fine

Anyone has any ideas or recommendations on how I can fix this problem please let me know!!!! Thanks for your time

also want to add in that it has been doing this for over a year, hasnt got worse or better. different answers ive gotten include clutch, synchro, stretched gear cable

Re: HELP! SECOND GEAR NOT SHIFTING SMOOTH

You have 160km = 99 miles to your original clutch? That doesn't sound right, do you mean 160,000 miles or 160,000 km?

If your transmission fluid was just changed, and you're over or near 70,000 MILES on your original clutch - It sounds like It's time to get it changed along with the throwout bearing.

If your clutch is fine, than it's a possibility of the following:
Clutch master cylinder
Slave cylinder
Syncros - last resort

I have that issue getting into First gear, changed everything but the syncros - my luck it's the syncros, so it wont be fixed for awhile

Re: HELP! SECOND GEAR NOT SHIFTING SMOOTH

Since you said it is rough going into 2nd at a higher RPM but goes in nicely at a lower RPM, I'm voting its the syncros. Mine had some going bad in it before I pulled the engine/tranny. 5th gear was rough to shift into some times.

Re: HELP! SECOND GEAR NOT SHIFTING SMOOTH

yes sorry 160,000 km original clutch.
I have noticed it shifts much better if I **** it right away from first to second like around 1500rpm, but if I go 2000rpm or higher put the clutch in wait like 3 second for the RPMS to drop down fully it will switch smoothly, it almost seems like the RPMS 'lag' when there dropping from first to second

Re: HELP! SECOND GEAR NOT SHIFTING SMOOTH

your 1st and 2nd gear synchronizer is going. the reason it shifts okay if you wait a few seconds is because your giving the synchro more time to line up with the speed gear (in this case 2nd gear). there isn't really much you can do if you just replaced the MTF. just drive it until you can't shift anymore and then you will have to buy a rebuilt tranny probly. replacing components in your own transmission isn't worth the time or money. and replacing synchro's is a HUGE job. and thats a bit of an understatement...
