Re: what kind of trans fluid do i need

I think if Honda recommends Honda ATF, there's a good reason for it. I used random crap from Autozone in my last Prelude and my trans started grinding and getting hard to shift. Switched to Honda MTF and never had problems again. Use the cheap stuff if you want, but it's just going to end your trans's life sooner. My personal recommendation: Spend the money on the good stuff.

Re: what kind of trans fluid do i need

You could put other brands for fluids but when it comes to trans fluid Honda's trans fluid is good the additives that are added are great and better than any other brand you could get.

I think EVERYWHERE that's the case. Anyways, we're not here to bull**** you, we're trying to give you legitimate advice based on personal experience. Seriously, use Honda ATF.

Re: what kind of trans fluid do i need

Try taking the solenoid off and cleaning the screens. As mine is about to go it clogs the screens. When they get clogged it cant find second gear(neutrals out) then if i give too much throttle it will come out of gear, like i was pushing in the clutch. Clean the screens and it shifts again, and doesn't come out of gear. Hope that helps.

Re: what kind of trans fluid do i need

You also need to remember that people who work on the floor in auto parts stores are usually just people who applied for a retail job, and even if they are a automotive enthusiest of some sort very few of them ever get any product training. I mean to say, other than what the suppliers themselves would provide. (which is usually along the liens of our product rocks, brand X sucks cocks)

Personally, I use the Honda ATF, because Honda recommends it. I also fill the tank with high octane unleaded because that's what the manufacturer reccommends. (Though the manufacturer also reccommends that you don't change the wheels and refrain from adding non-genuine accessories...an request that I have largely ignored for obvious reasons...)

I make it a point to do the exact opposite of whatever the people at Autozone/Advance/OReilly/Napa say. They have always led me in the wrong direction.

Re: what kind of trans fluid do i need

Ill check out the solenoid... and it seems to get almost every gear except first. it has issues getting started going when at a dead stop. it feels like when driving a 5spd and you dont let the clutch out fast enough and it almost dies but catches just in time not to. and it rolls backwards when im in drive?

Re: what kind of trans fluid do i need

Sounds like a pressure problem internal to the trans, not good.

It is funny how many recommend only genuine OEM parts and fluids, then I take my Prelude into Honda because they offer oil change deals cheaper then I can do it and I do not have to jack it up, lay on the ground, get up and down 1/2 dozen times, dispose of the fluid in the dumpster when no one is looking; then my local Honda dealership uses Quaker State Oil exclusively???????????

Re: what kind of trans fluid do i need

well i dont think anyone here has the time to make a list of EVERY part that can be substituted. yes oil at honda is the same as walmart. will the guy at walmart treat your car the same...... i have no eveidence to support this but i have heard that even though bosch makes an o2 sensor for the lude and makes the sensors for honda to resell, they arent the same. stuff like that. perhaps penzoil makes the atf for honda, that doesnt mean that penzoil atf is equal. might be, but not a certainty. when it comes to anything mechanical i always get oem honda parts. to further illustrate, take a dvd player as an example. we all know that many just have different brand names on the front but contain the same internals. just cause a no name brand has a toshiba label inside doesnt mean its the same as a top of the line toshiba dvd player. just that it was made by toshiba.
as ive said before, get honda parts, they were made just for your car, not something good enough for many cars. then when something goes wrong, troubleshooting is easy. sure put the generic atf in, if it doesnt change anything how do you know if its still the atf or something else.

I've heard of some people using GM Synchromesh in their Prelude gearboxes, though don't remember ever reading of results.

Oh, and 99PreludeQZ, your sig is wrong. It says I'm using XP and IE8, when I'm running Vista and Firefox. And the ISP is wrong too...
