Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

I'm looking to buy a Honda Prelude as a my daily driver. A nearby dealer has a 1998 Prelude SH with 88k miles on it, original, clean title, the car is in excellent condition but I feel that are asking too much for a 13 year old car, the want $10,500 Out the Door price. I was looking at Kelly blue book its priced around $7k. Is that how much a 1998 SH is going for with that many miles? Is that true market value?

Will a sh lude give at least 25mpg combined city/highway?

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

That really does seem like way too much. Although, that is great mileage for thay old of a car. I have a '98 base and that gas mpg seems about right. I'd try to barter with them a lil' or keep looking. Good luck!

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

Thanks for your reply, i offered $7,500 (twice) plus tax and fees but they said no. They said the car in that condition is hard to find so thats how they justified the above blue book value. If it was a 2001 I would probably come close to their price. The car is in excellent condition, all stock, clean title.

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

Well, maybe watch it for awhile. The dealer I got mine from had it advertised at $6500 at first, and every few weeks the price dropped....the salesman wouldn't negotiate below $5000 so I went to the gen manager and got it for $4500 out the door. The dealership might consider it rare. but ultimately it will depend on a quick sale. If they aren't getting any interest at that price, they'll drop it.

That's to much I think. I'd wait a while or keep negotiating.

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

The car has been sitting on their lot for at least 2+ weeks since I've been monitoring it. I also thing 10.5k out the door is too much. What is a fair price to offer? I was thinking of 8.5k out the door, but anything higher just seems like throwing money away.

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

I know Canada is different but I got my 2001 SE (SH without the ATTS) a couple months ago with 105,000 miles for $7500 and considering our dollars are par.. $10500 seems waay too much.

You guys think if I offer $8,500 out the door (my tax is 9%) is a fair price or I'm still too high?

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

I would not offer $8,500 sure the miles are low but they are not unbelievably low. I would pass up this deal and wait for another.

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

Just wait it out $10,500 is too much, Im pretty sure that the dealer didn't pay that much for it considering the bluebook value says $7,500. Show the money in a couple of weeks and I bet they will take it lol..

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

You guys have no right to give advice on what's too much. If you really got the goosebumps for a 98 sh, go for it. Too much might be true, but is it your dream car or not? If you're gonna wait for the pricedrop, you might not get it.

On the other hand, get a civic ep3 2003-2005 or RSX 2001-2003 for about the same kind of money with more options in regards to tuning. Both are great dd's.
Lastly, wait a week before looking at the prelude again. If you couldn't stop thinking about it, make a offer.

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

$10,500 is definitely high priced. I would pass. I got mine with 96k on it for $6k just for reference. I love preludes and all, but that is too much to pay.

Thank you all for replying to my post. I talked to the sales rep at the dealer the car was sold last night. The search continues. Will be searching for 2000 civic si as well.

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

Damn, I would definitely pass. I have a 99 SH I'm still on my first tank of gas since i bought it 2 weeks ago, so i haven't calculated my MPG, but I only got mine for $3k :D and it's not in bad shape. It's 12 year old and has one dent in the drivers fender, 2 tiny dents on the door and then one are on the rear quarter that I need to get fixed, but the interior is immaculate and it's mechanically amazing. I just don't think he knew what he had...

Just wait, he'll be forced to lower his asking price or take your offer.

Re: Fair price for 1998 Prelude SH ?

Thats WAY over priced. I know you're in a different area, but print these out and bring them to the dealer. Tell em it'd cost less to come up here and buy them:

That car is worth about $4,000 from a private party. Keep looking.
