Check Engine Light 3rd time - Help me - P420

Hey guys, thanks for your time to look at my post.

I have 99 SH manual about 129K.

Before P420 was on, I forgot the code but the Bank 2 was bad, and I replaced the back oxygen sensor, and cleared the code, but the engine light lit again and this time Bank 1 as front one, so I went autozone, and bought $90 one instead of $270 (OEM). After clearing the code about less than 20 miles, the engine light is back on. Guy at the autozone said they can exchange it or refund it and obviously I need one. I will be broke, but do I need to get that $270 (OEM) one?

Have any of you had same issue?

Give me some advice please.

Thank you!

if its the 420 " catalyst levels below threshold, could be a few things, ive got mine on too. the guys at the dealership said that if i have an aftermarket cat, replace it. probably the o2 sensor. far as i know, the honda o2 sensor is actually a regular brand like bosch cant remember which one though. problem with the o2's though, they fight each other. you can get a code for the rear sensor when actually its the front one thats broken. just a nasty ordeal sometimes.

Re: Check Engine Light 3rd time - Help me - P420

as said the oem cats for any honda will run you 3 to 4 hundred. i replaced the cat in my civic with an oe style aftermarket cat and havent had an issue. been a year. i would never buy a universal one though. find em on ebay. dont get the cheap performance /high flow crap for $30. get the most expensive one there is. should only be around 100 bucks. it will be a direct fit/bolt on. the big catch though is if anything aftermarket is used and you take it to honda with your arms in the air telling them to fix it, they will tell you they cant do anything till they get oem parts on it.

I had this same code pop up on my 99, but I cleared it and it hasn't come back on. Could it be as you say a "lazy" o2 sensor? Or my cat? Eh, either way it stayed off for me. I work at an auto parts store and let me tell you, if you have a connection through a place called"IMC" it's the way to go to get genuine parts without having to pay the ridiculous pricing at a dealership.

I had the same code on my 97 base this aftermarket cat by magnaflow did the trick. No CEL has returned since. It is a direct fit and I got it for about $87.00 shipped. Can't hardly beat that. Simple bolt on. Search Results

Clear the code, then ride your car hard. Vtec a few times and stop granny shifting. Thats what I did and the intermittent P0420 code stopped coming on for me.
