5th gen 97 prelude w/turbo

Sup guys i got a 97 prelude with a turbo kit. The first problem is I don't know crap about cars. The second problem is the turbo has a crack on it and I have no idea if its better to keep the turbo and fix it or just take it out. The third problem is what do i have to get if i take the turbo out. Like what parts and stuff I have to get so I can get it running great. And I also have a problem with the car where i'd drive the car and it would run great until i turn it off and come back and try to turn it back on but it doesn't start all it does is make an "eeee" noise. I think its the car immobilizer not recognizing the key since its not an oem key or its something completely different all together. If you could help thanks I really don't want to sell it since it's so awesome.

Re: 5th gen 97 prelude w/turbo

First glance it looks like you may need a new one, but don't hold me to that... do you have any records of the build? or know of the shop that did the work?

If not, the car may not even be built properly to handle the turbo

Well that is the first, second, third and fourth problem. Why would you buy a car that has an aftermarket turbo kit on it when you do not know anything about cars, may I ask how much money you paid for it?

And you do know that with a turbo car you let it warm up for at least 30 seconds before driving it and cool down for around a minute or so depending on how hard you drive it before you shut it off right? I doubt the "eeee" noise has anything to do with the key, but I would have to actually hear it.

im pretty sure the guy that had the work done didnt have the car tuned right cause my friend has told me that its not sounding the way it should sound. So im going to get it tuned after I got some work done on it

I had bought it cause I had always liked preludes and the turbo was just a plus. I paid 4300 and it has a new engine and tranny with about 900 or 1000 miles on them. But everything else looks like someone went to a junkyard to get parts cause its mickeymoused like a mofo. When I drive my car I always let it warm up for at a minute if its warm outside and a couple minutes if its cold. I never drive the car hard I always shift between 3k to 4k so I can break in the engine and tranny. And the noise I guess im going to have to record a video.

Do you have records of the motor with that many miles on it and thats pretty cheap for a boosted prelude. I would never buy a car boosted except if it was a car thats made for boost from the factory. Preludes are not good cars for boost if they are not built for it.. I would get a compression test on the motor cause im pretty sure its not a built motor for that much money.. Get a new turbo and take to a tuner shop to get it check out for any other problems, Im pretty sure your car needs tobe tune ASAP..

Sounds like you got yourself into a HUUUGEEEEE headache/mess buying that car, I feel bad for you. And that entire setup looks even more ghetto-rigged than my car, you couldn't have paid me enough money to buy that car. Did you even pop the hood before pulling the trigger, or have any idea what you were getting yourself into??

Not trying to preach to you or anything bro, but this is what forums are for. U couldve joined here and posted up pics of the lude and asked what we thought about it. You couldve prolly saved $4300 and a big headache. Honestly, if I was in your situation I would take the turbo kit off and make sure the motor and trans are in good condition. If not, replace them. The outside of the car looks beautiful, but u have some work to do motor wise.

yeah I know man -.- I was pissed, yeah I checked the hood the paper and everything. Yeah I already knew what I was getting myself into, my biggest problem here is that everyone around here has muscle cars so no gives a crap about another ricer. Thankfully my cousin is going to help me out to get this running back to its former glory.

yeah man I know haha I messed but has been done has been done. Yeah im just going to get it taken out get the engine and tranny checked out and just keep it without the turbo. The motor needs a hell of alot of work, all I need to know is what parts would I need after I take the turbo out.

all the parts look like they came from a junkyard or something with the exception of the engine and tranny. Luckily I haven't driven the car in awhile cause of the cracked turbo and I dont to mess up the engine. But ill get it tuned for sure in like a week.

I really dont think that motor has 1k miles on it man, if thats the case the motor itself is worth 2.5k or more. I got a motor with 30k miles documented for 1.2k......open up the cover and take a look at it

ok now that i've had some beer, i'm in a better mood than this morning, and willing to help out
luckily your TURBO isn't cracked, that's the downpipe that cracked which is a much better scenario cuz that can be welded up. the downpipe is just tubing that connects the turbo to the exhaust.

also 4300 is a pretty good deal, so i don't blame you. turbo'd h22 prelude = sex.
i spy a turbonetics wastegate, which could possibly mean its either a turbonetics, greddy, or drag turbo kit with that manifold design, which are decent turbo kits (not ebay). or it could just be a turbonetics w/g, who knows.

I think its a turbonetics but then again it just might be a part from it. Hopefully its just the tubing and nothing to major. That car hauls major ass, I just stopped driving it cause of the crack. I didn't want to make it worse.

I had the paperwork for it until i let my aunt into the car, cause she had been bugging me that she wanted to clean it. She threw out a bunch of papers cause she thought they were useless(typical mexican family haha).

If you want to get rid of the turbo parts. let me know. I'd be willing to buy it off of you. You know what size that turbo is?

But in all honesty, it looks good besides the engine bay. Oil lines running over the engine. =/ Looks like you have a long project ahead of you though. Good Luck!
