Im new and in need of info

well im new to the forum and new to preludes in general. im gettin ready to buy a 5th gen lude and i was wondering what are some things i need to make sure and check when i go and look and test drive potential cars. I read up some on trannies, im definitely goin to get a manual. What should i expect as far as miles and prices also. the ones ive found for the most part are all over the kelly blue book and the miles are over 100,000 unless the engine has been replaced, and the rare few with lower miles are goin for 8 and above. Im currently out of the country, im in the army and im in iraq for teh next two weeks or so. Any info, help, or criticism would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Re: Im new and in need of info

First thing - when you go to look at one in person, check for quarter rust. When you purchase a 'lude, remove the rubber stripping in the rear wheel well ASAP and clean it. It begins to rust right behind that stripping - so that's where you check for the rust when inspecting the car.

Check for oil leaks, make sure the timing belt/water pump/ manual tensioner has all been replaced.

Depending on what part of the country you live in - the price of a 'lude will differ. Here on the east coast, $9k+ is normal for anything 110k miles or less (properly maintained with all records of course)

If you're really trying to knock down the price, check the floor in the trunk for any rust/ water damage. As well as under the bottom portion of the rear seat. The tail-light seals are known to leak, as well as on occasion the sunroof drains. Easy fix's, but most dealerships/ private sellers that just "drive" the car wont know how to fix them.

Good choice on sticking with the manual - you're already one step ahead of most new Prelude enthusiasts :)

alright thanks man, and is there a way to get the check engine light to come on if the codes were cleared, or does it come on a little while after the engine has been running, I know with a 1996-1998 mustang, if someone was to clear the codes after three cycles of starting the car and turning it off the check engine light will come back on and you can get the codes again, is there some way to do this with a prelude?

Idk if there is something like that but turn the engine on let it run then take it for a drive and if it sounds good and there are no cels coming up then you are probably good to go. Also when you turn on the car make sure the CEL comes on so that you know they have not taped over it or taken the bulb out lol
