How long will a clutch last?

I am looking at a 99 base Prelude with 142K.

He says the clutch has never been changed. Everything feels pretty tight, but I am going to look at it again tomorrow.

How much life could there possibly be in a car with 142K?

Re: How long will a clutch last?

clutchs can last a long time as long as you know how to drive and don't always beat on it. I've had an Exedy clutch in my Prelude for about 5-6 years and I think it's just starting to act up, cause sometimes it's hard to get into gears

Re: How long will a clutch last?

Depends on if the previous owner knew how to drive a manual or not.

like guitars, cars, and women, it depends on how they are treated. You could easily get another 100k out of it if ya don't dog on it.

Re: How long will a clutch last?

stock clutches if driven normally can last a long time. I bought a eg sedan from original ower which had 210k on it, but he did do a lot of driving from IA to MN for business.

IMHO I would drive it until you feel it start to slip.
When it does start to slip, just baby it while driving, it's not like when it slips your car won't be able to get you to work.

order a exedy clutch and your good to go.

Re: How long will a clutch last?

My 1987 Toyota Celica GT had 228k miles on it with original clutch in it. Dude in his late 50's owned it. Still wasn't slipping when I totaled it last year. I was a sad panda.

Re: How long will a clutch last?

As everyone has said, it is all about how the car has been treated.
I have personally seen cars with over 300k miles on their OEM clutch.

Re: How long will a clutch last?

How much is the average going rate for a service station (non-dealer) to replace a 5th Gen clutch, assuming the job only entails the replacement of the clutch and customary related parts (fluids, labor, etc). I'm just looking for a range.

Re: How long will a clutch last?

My dads 92 mustang clutch has never been changed and still grips like its brand new. but my friends 05 tib clutch lasted him a few years because he sucks and driving. it all depends on the past owner. i would just wait on buying a new one until you notice problems.

Re: How long will a clutch last?

hey about the clutch depending on how the car was driven you could another 150 k or 50 miles if the guy before was doing hole shots and slipping it alot it could be worn just ask him how the car was driven

Re: How long will a clutch last?

I passed on that 99 because there is just no way to tell how the car has been driven and it makes pretty much no sense to buy a car unless you know everything about it.

It looked like a good deal and the carfax was clean, but I can't be buying a 99 car with 142K unless I can disassemble the clutch and inspect it for wear, and pretty much no one is going to let you do that.

has anyone considered using x-ray technology to inspect the clutch before purchase?

would the X-rays not just see right through the clutch plate, and render the process obsolete? i dont know what kind of an accurate reading u can get when u are looking thru a very dense material (steel) and trying to capture detail in a less dense object like a clutch plate (ceramic?)......
i just cant imagine it working... Unlesssss, grab the ultrasound machine and that gel, and treat that tranny like a pregnant woman....!!

Re: How long will a clutch last?

I guess I don't see where the OP is coming from wanting to physically inspect the clutch. Take it for a test drive, get it to about 45-50mph and put it in 5th and slam on the gas to see if it slips. Is this test not sufficient?

If I were buying a car and really concerned with the health of the engine a compression and leak down test might be a little higher up on the priority list than gawking at a clutch.
