Loving my H23a vtec Bluetop

First of all I would like to say thanks to all who shared info on this specific swap on 5th Gens. It took me a couple of weeks to the swap cause I ran into a few bumps.. I had a P2U5 accord tranny that I was going to use but I wanted to see if I could swap the gears from my SH tranny to the accord tranny FAIL... Everything looked like it matched up but one of the gears from the accord tranny just didn't workout.. I tried to put the accord tranny back together and Fail trying to do that also... Well as you know I had to buy another tranny I went with a H23a1 5speed tranny.. Once I got everything in the car it was time to fire it up and there was no crank... I found out the timing was off on the cams. I had to pull the valve cover off and had a friend to pull off one side of the timing belt so I can correct the cam that was off, it was a hard task to do but we got it right this time. I tried to crank it again once I got the timing correct and she turn over with no problem . I took the car for a test drive and she pulled like a champ.. My new F1 racing stage 2 clutch and 8.5lbs flywheel made a huge difference in acceleration also.. I notice a huge difference from the H22a4 motor in torque which was great... I forgot to mention that this was a tiger japanese motor I bought for $650 and she ran strong no problems with the motor what so ever... I have a few pics of the H23a vtec in the car once again thanks to all for all the helpful info...

Accord Wagon SiR (CH9 FWD 1999-2001, CL2 AWD 2000-2001)
The SiR wagon model included the only 2.3 LITER H23A DOHC VTEC H-series engine in the Honda line-up. The H23A engine was rated at 200 hp / 190 hp (AWD) at 6,800 rpm and torque of 162.8 lbft (220.7 Nm) at 5300 rpm, 10.6:1 compression, 87 mm (3.4 in) X 95 mm (3.7 in) (Bore and Stroke), and a 7300 rpm redline like other H-series VTEC engines from factory. The H23A also came with a blue valve cover and was the largest displacement for the H-series Honda engines. The H23A was mounted with a tilt towards the driver. The H23A had a longer stroke than the H22A. Specifications for the H23A were; 87 mm (3.4 in) X 95 mm (3.7 in) (Bore and Stroke)and H22A has 87 mm (3.4 in) X 90.7 mm (3.6 in) (Bore and Stroke). The H23A had better acceleration because the peak torque occurred sooner at lower rpms when compared to the H22A.

Re: Loving my H23a vtec Bluetop

I wanted a bluetop but they were too expensive when I did my swap. Got my h22a for 1200 shipped. The blue tops were 13+shipping. good deal from tiger tho. I looked at them but heard nightmare stories so went thru a guy here locally. Glad to see ur back on the rd and congrat on the new motor. Also make sure u break that f1 clutch in properly. If not it'll fail very quick. If u properly break it in tho u should be ok

Re: Loving my H23a vtec Bluetop

Im running the stock SH ecu so the redline is base on me and the car runs perfect I will put a video on when I can. Keegan it wouldn't have took two weeks if I had some real honda guys helping me out. I was the only one who knew all that had to be done but for this swap it could take a couple of days if you not a full time worker lol... I really haven't took the motor to the extreme yet trying to do a proper 500 mile break-in.. The F1 racing clutch and flywheel is just like any other clutch and flywheel just make sure you break it in properly also but it pull hard and strong....

I can tell you got that from Wikipedia, and that is actually wrong, the h23 has a lower redline. you really should take what you read on that site with a grain of salt

Re: Loving my H23a vtec Bluetop

I know what the redline is not saying that I'm red lining the motor I just have to watch the rpm gauge when push it until I get a chip ecu for the swap.. But the car runs fine with the stock ecu just be sure to keep your eyes on the cluster.

It is 6800. Just because your tach still says 7300 from your H22 doesn't mean you can redline an H23A to 7300.

best bet is to take it to a paint shop and have them use the color gun on it. basically takes a picture of the paint and tells you how to make blend it

Don't know too much about a 4th Gens being that I only own one and it was a auto. I'm pretty sure its easier since its obd-1.. I had to interterchange a lot of parts from the H22a4 to get it running..

Re: Loving my H23a vtec Bluetop

i did the swap h23a1 to h23v the swap is not hard its like swapping a h22
but u will need extra $$$$ on top of the h23vtec for the h22 parts u will need to get the swap done.
its will worth it bc the extra tourqe makes a big difference IMO

I redline my H23a to 7k. It doesn't seem to pull much more after that.

The acceleration from the H23a vtec just blows my mind away though just stunning on how quick it gains power at a much lower rpm. I bet it would be a pretty good to have it booted on 8psi lol...
