Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

one thing to keep in mind, if the 97 is a generation 5.0 then 98 to 01 would be gen 5.1
there are many parts unique to a 97 that are almost impossible to find except through the dealer while 98 and up are much easier. would also steer clear of a 97 SS if the transmission has not been replaced yet or rebuilt.

Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

depends, main diff on the sh is the atts. great feature as well as some other goodies, leather, spoiler, this and that. main catch with the sh is that if you want to start tweaking the engine itself, the first step you take will disable the atts and as long as you play with the engine itself the atts will be offline. its just not compatible with tuning gizmos. so why pay more for it. if you just want a cool ride and are going to work on the handling and appearance then fo sho, go with the sh.

That green one looks no good. Black one with the wing is alright. Bit high on the miles. Stay 98 and up

It doesn't look like it to me but I'm no prelude expert. My lude has a stock wing on it and its nothing like that but idk if there were other options. Looks like an aftermarket wing for sure tho

Im 99% positive thats not a spoiler from a prelude. And I wouldnt go for that one anyways unless u found out exactly why the cel is on. Ive had a bad experience with being told the cel is on for one reason, but then it being a completely different thing.

Wait...WHAT??! like what? I've never heard of such a thing.

Big thing to steer away from is an auto. You hear lotsa horror stories and unless you bought the car new you don't know how it was driven.

Personally at the right price id buy the second one. Without stereo! Except maybe the deck.
Assuming his story checks out that is....

Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

lots of stupid stuff. theres nothing wrong with a 98 auto, just the 97. ask your dealer next time you are in. first thing that comes to mind was my srs module. unique to 97. check ebay for srs module. they all list 98 to 01. try to find one for a 97...there are some wiring harnesses under the dash by the left toe that also have unique 97 part #s. i was in my steering wheel two weeks ago and had to be 97 specific on a part. now, not to say that some of these are incompatible but there has to be a reason. not uncommon for a first model year car to have revisions into the 2nd year.

as for the spoiler no, its not factory for the lude but it does look like a factory honda spoiler

Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

uhm...in my opinion, the number one thing to stay away from is SALVAGE titles.

if there are things to repair, just estimate the repair cost, and try to bargain it down by the estimate if thats the car you want. use reasonable excuses/reasons.
&of course test drive it.

between Base & SH, stock for stock, SH handles better, usually a have higher resale value, & are harder to find...<-(imo)

even though there is a 3 or 4 horsepower difference between 97-98's & 99-01...its just a few HP.

Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

I have an SH.

SH=Sooper Headache. Pick a base.

All 5th gens came with the H22a4, as per my knowledge. The newer ones 200-2001 I believe, came with like 5 more hp. You'd have to verify that though.

Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

This whole base vs sh thing is kinda confusing me. I have been researching a ton on here because i love the knowledge i can gain in just hrs. Everything I have read on here basically states that a sh is a bitch to work on. Even something as simple has the oil pan gasket turns into a big ordeal. Do I have this correct? I will def be working on my prelude myself, thats one of the reasons I love these cars so much, they are not difficult to work on.
With all that said this one is my personal fav so far........lol and it looks like an sh

Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

An SH is a little more complicated to work on mechanically. If you are planning on leaving the motor and tranny stock, the SH may be more preferable. Stick to the 99-01 years on the SH models though, it has been said that most of the "kinks" have been worked out in the later years. If you are planning on heavily modding the car, a base model would probably suit you best. Perks of an SH: no rear deck light, courtesy lights in doors, painted side/rear skirts, ATTS. although many people disagree with the ATTS, I personally enjoy the extra handling characteristics. One last suggestion if you are buying from a private seller: take the guages out and make sure all the warning lights work, some people are shady and will take them out. maybe i'm just paranoid.

not at all. while you probably cant just go taking a dash apart when viewing a vehicle, how many of us check to see that every light comes on when you first turn the key. pulling bulbs for the cel and srs light is a much more common practice than i think we would like to believe.

I thought if the light didn't come on it was good.....no one buy my car! Lol

The system check is the way to do it. If You don't see lights illuminating they areeither burned out or removed. Another option is cruise to a parts store that will scan for codes. Most do it for free. Never hurts to get something while you're there. They remember freeloaders...

that's a loaded question. I own a SH, and I like it. The ATTS could be a headache if it is not properly working at the time you buy the car. It is not an easy component to service. If you can find an SH with a proper service history, especially the ATTS unit, then I would opt for that. Parts for the ATTS are quite expensive though. You could always purchase a base model and put a LSD in it though, which is probably cheaper to maintain and gives somewhat parallel performance. Research the ATTS system if you're still interested, I know there are a lot of threads on PZ about it. It all comes down to preference, but the key is: KNOW what you are buying.

Re: Sold my 4th gen to buy a 5th..... need help with pcking one

My advice is to be patient if you can. If you want something you can buy and be happy with looks and everything but good condition and not to many miles you may have to wait. If you have the money to pay for the best mechanical condition one with low miles that may need a paint job and/or some goodies or whatever to look how you want do that. Depends what you want and what you can do
