Starting an h23 vtec build for 5th gen lude!

Hey guys. I picked up this h23a1 block from this kid. It was just machine and put together by a machine here in CT. News pistons, rings, bearings, chromoly sleeves. I got it for six hundred bucks, so couldnt say no. He needed money to finish a 350 s10. Also got ARP head studs in box, and a gasket kit in the deal. I i just have to transfer all my stuff from my scored up block from that piston blowing on me. Not sure my oil pumps condition is from the chunks of metal. but it was running like that so who knows til i get ther. Read a lot about people doing this. Sounds like it will be torquey and it seems straight forward. I'm gonna take my oil squirters and whatever else i have on my list. May be counter productive but this block is closed decked. The kid set this up for boost so i have no clue what the compression is. I think the crank had been balanced too. Those dimples on the journal tells me that, maybe im wrong. Any input if you've done this would be great. I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death. So since its sleeved can i run any piston i want now??? Goal now is to get the old block out.

pretty nice color, i had a similar issue with my h22 and ended up reusing the oil pump as well. It's not running yet because i havent put it all together.

oh man, when i put my h22 back together i messed up bad with the wrist pins and type s pistons. the number two piston shattered and im not sure if anything got past the screen in the pickup. i heard a weird whining noise after my knocking started. Maybe it was metal in the gears. i havent taken it apart. but i dont have work this week so im gonna get on her. 98vtec u have a nice h23 build thread on honda tech right. Thats what gave me the inspiration for this. I also couldnt pass up the deal on this short block.. One other question too if u dont mind, what would my redline be if i used my oil squirters? The crank is balance and there areforged rods? 7200- 7500 would be nice. Thanks dude, i might need some more advice if ur willing to help!

I think what 98vtec was saying is get a new oil pump for sure, don't put on an oil pump that there is any questions about. If I remember correctly the h23 rods have something that will splash up oil on the pistons to keep them cool but lots of people use the oil squirters also they just need to be bent a little to fit in. If you do everything right (build the head also) I don't see why you couldn't rev to 8k

I would do Honda, but I really don't know. When I don't know I usually go with Honda OEM lol. What is the head built with? And make sure the crank is ballanced to at least 8k and the flywheel and everything get ballanced also.

Re: Starting an h23 vtec build for 5th gen lude!

Ferrea oversize stainless valves, 5 angle valve job, full polish, crower titanium retainers. if im going to get nutz with this i was thinking new springs cause those are still stock. my machine shop said those would be fine to a certain point. i know if i got cams i would have to do that. i'd be happy with 7500rpms though 8000k sounds cool too haha. i just wanted something different and something with a little more torque.

Yeah man I would buy the valve springs definitely because then you can put it all back together and you won't have to take off the head if you want to add cams, you can just pull the valve cover and the cam caps and rails.

Painting the front of my short block today. Still needs one more coat of color and then the clear. Would you guys paint the back of the block? Nobody is really gonna see it. My buddy is telling me im being lazy! But i want to save the paint for brackets and other little things. Either way i think that gold will go really nice with the black of my engine bay! Thanks for looking!
