Icon5 DRL and high beams work when they want

ok so from day 1 ( that i bought it ) the DRLs were not working and the DRL light flickers no big deal just annoying when its flickers on and off ,

also my high beams will only work once in a while i will click them on and nothing , no high beam lights not blue light on the dash then ill do it the next day and bam works untill i either click them off or shut the car off

so i pulled a wiring digram at work today and notice every thing runs to the DRL control module

is this the module ? please scroll down a little bit its a big pic of a blue plug that goes into a silver box ?

How to disable the daytime running lights - Honda Prelude Forum - Prelude Online.com

any one have any suggestions or thoughts i just thought id start at the DRL moduel because all my problems lead to that and the switch but i dont see it being a switch problem for DRLs

thanks in advance every one !

Re: DRL and high beams work when they want

if you didnt know or for those that dont, the high beam bulbs are the running lights. when i bought mine the drl light was on and by simply changing both bulbs it went off and all works and didnt have an issue till i bought some super white bulbs off ebay. they work sometime and not others. i havent had a chance to put the other ones back in but i know its the problem. try that, they should only run you about 15 to 20 for the pair.

your drl module will be under the dash at your left toe. should be a mitsoba. they do fail but i would look other places first.

Re: DRL and high beams work when they want

yep for sure. in the helms manual, chapter 23 page 73/74 there is a full laid out guide to diagnosing your drl module as well as the full drl circuit.

Re: DRL and high beams work when they want

Check your bulb sockets. They are notorious for melting/poor connections. That would help explain intermittent operation.

Re: DRL and high beams work when they want

i dont have a helms manual ( do you have a link for one ?) i only have the honda manual and the drl chapter is missing ( got it online PDF )

so i went a bought another DRL module and popped it in and got the same thing

so i put the orignal one back in and now my high beams have been working the whole way home :) BUT still no DRL

also just want to know. when you turn your head lights on the low beams come on now when you turn the high beams on do all 4 lights ( high and low ) stay on or should lows turn off and highs come on ? cause when i have my highs on lows are on as, im sure thats suppost to happen but just wanted to check to make sure incase there is a short there some where

Re: DRL and high beams work when they want

ok so just did some testing , checked all fuses there all good , then i tested the sockets on each high beam

drivers side - lights off and DRL light lit up on dash both terminals tested positive when high beams on 1 + 1 is -

pass. side no lights on 1 terminal tested + other had nothing when high beams were turned on 1 was - and the other nothing

im going threw the wiring digram now but coming up with nothing and suggestions were to go ?

Do the DRLs turn off when e-brake is pulled ? maybe last owner just grounded it out

Re: DRL and high beams work when they want

well, most importantly, are your headlights stock. next. if you replaced the control unit then obviously its in the wiring somewhere. find that manual. you unplug the wiring harness and put a multimeter (10 bucks) from lead to lead. the manual tells you what the meter should read and if it doesnt match then it tells you whats wrong. now it may tell you that you dont have continuity from the unit to the lights(no sht right) well now its up to you to find out where its broken. unfortunately i bought an electrical nightmare. every time i go to work on something theres electrical tape and remnants of sub standard work. is it just the front drl's or all the way around. if its all the way around it might be an easy find most likely under the dash. if its just the front, then odds are good maybe someones been monkeying around. have a look. if you see any electrical tape or butt connectors or crimp connectors, splicing things investigate. use a continuity tester to check both sides of the connection or simply do the right thing, use a soldering iron, fix it protect it properly with a silicone tube or electrical paste and move on to the next one.
