Places to look for rust on a 5th Gen Prelude

I am currently looking at a 99 base model. It looks like the car I really want, but I am concerned about rust. Where are the key places to look for rust on these cars? If this has already been asked, please direct me to the thread.

I assume the quarters and frame rails, but any specific ways to detect the beginnings of rust?

Typically on Honda's it is the rear wheel wells, lower door panels, front/ rear window cowls and trunk floor, also check the underside of the car and suspension components. Good luck.

I'd check under the side skirts to because salt can trapped there and start rusting not common but I've seen it there.

Trunk. Under the spare tire area. See if any water leaked there. Also check engine bay. If it's rusting around where the suspension is bolted on, then f the car. Even fixing that won't make it stable.

Hey does anyone have a photo of where the rust can be found on the front suspension? I am not sure what he is talking about. Do you mean in the engine compartment where the shocks are bolted, or on the firewall itself?

Say some water had leaked into the spare tire area...how do you suppose he'd get it out

He would have to take the two plugs out and let most of the water drain out, then get an old towel to soak up the remaining water. Next, you go to Honda Automotive Parts and buy two new tail light gaskets to replace the bad ones. While you wait for your gaskets to ship, keep the plugs out so that the water doesn't sit. Finally, go to this thread:
Trunk Leak and check if you have any other leaks leading to the trunk.

In other words, it'll be hard for you to find a rust free Prelude considering they're all over 11 years old.

Re: Places to look for rust on a 5th Gen Prelude

I found mine in New Jersey (of all places with salt etc...) rust free.

You can find them anywhere, just depends on how well they were maintained.

Re: Places to look for rust on a 5th Gen Prelude

5th gen's were galvanized, stem to stern. Top to bottom.

Anywhere the paint pops off and galvanization is gone will rust.
Like wings said, if it was maintained decent the only rust to fear is in the trunk from leaking tail light gaskets.
