SRS Light when Braking Hard?

I had to slam on the brakes HARD on the way home tonight to prevent rearending some dumbass who slamed on his brakes for following to close to the person in front of him. Anyway, when I slammed the brakes the SRS light came on and stayed on. I know how to clear the SRS light but thought it was odd that the SRS light came on when I did not even skid. Anyone here ever experienced this? I would like to know the cause of the SRS light coming on when applying the brakes really hard and not even hitting anything or skidding.

Re: SRS Light when Braking Hard?

SRS should go on when you hit the brakes hard. That instant jolt is what makes your seatbelt lock up.

someone correct me if i'm wrong - but srs "system restraint system" has nothing to do with your actual brakes, just that jolt from you suddenly hitting them.

Re: SRS Light when Braking Hard?

Yes that is what SRS stands for. I do believe it would be from the seatbelt locking up hard, but I'm not positive.

Re: SRS Light when Braking Hard?

Just realized my stupid mistake - the seat belts aren't wired XD just has the sensor to tell if you've got it buckeled lol.

I still think it just has something to do with that instant jolt of you hitting the brakes...

Re: SRS Light when Braking Hard?

srs stands for supplemental restrain system ( air bags ) seat belts are standard restraints (in the prelude anyway ) . the seat belt light is not tied to the srs lights on the preludes it is on the newer hondas that have seat belt pre tensioners that fire upon impact to actually pull the belt tight on you . the reason a seat belt locks is the ratchet system inside the belt retractor . the srs light is not on from the belt locking tight . something shifted and lost connection causing the srs light to come on . you need to pull the code to find the source of the fault . it was not caused by the seat belt locking ..
