Urgent Value Question!

Ok, so here's the deal with my hunt. I found a 99 Red Prelude. The carfax is clean on it, the dealer wants 7500. It's got 103,000 miles on it. I brought it to my mechanic today, and he informed me that it needs the water pump, tensioner, and timing belt replaced (which I already knew were gonna need to be replaced.. no surprise there). He said that the (driver side only) power door locks and power mirrors aren't working right now. The headlights are cloudy (the lenses are old and dirty inside) and the clutch needs to be at the very least adjusted (also not an issue as I plan on upgrading soon anyway).

Anyway, here's my question. The dealer doesn't want to budge on the price... even with all the issues, he's under the impression that he can get 7500 for it at a dealership auction (which he must be having pipe dreams about, because I personally know people who have told me that he won't get more than MAYBE 6 for it at an auction like that with all of those issues). I basically have until tomorrow night to decide whether or not I want the car, because on wednesday he's moving it to auction. Do you guys think it's worth the price?

I have a mechanic friend who already told me he would help me with the timing belt and tensioner, I've never done a water pump before... is that something that I would be able to do myself/with my mechanic friend? I'm fairly mechanically inclined so I'm not afraid of diggin into it. Is that something that the engine has to be pulled to have replaced? Or is it somethign that can be replaced with the engine in place?

Also, if that's not something I could do myself, any estimates for how much it would cost to have it repaired?

The headlights don't bother me at all, I can always buy some from someone who is parting out their Prelude... and I can just make due until then. The power door locks and mirrors issue sounds like it's localized to an issue in that door only. Whether it's mechanical or electrical, I'm not sure, but I'm confident that with the help of some guys on here and other forums, that I could figure it out.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Is it worth it? And any estimates for the repair costs?

99 Prelude w/ 100,000 miles for $7500 from a DEALER sounds pretty good actually.

When you crack at the timing belt, the water pump will be there for you to change. Download the online manual, it has step by step on how to change the pump. Your mechanic friend will assist you lovely.

As for the headlights, check this out:
Meguiar's PlastX- Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish

Sounds like a great price for a 99. Typically, a shop will charge you around $400 or so for a full timing belt replacement, which includes water pump, seals & gaskets. Try to get them to do a valve clearance as well.

Bring $7300 cash, and show him 7. $7500 really isn't a bad deal from a dealer, but you can always try and save a little :P

If your set on that car go for it.

I would tell him see ya next week though when he brings it back from auction cause it won't pull what he wants.

Thanks guys, you can close this thread whenever you feel like it, my problem has been resolved (kind of). The guy sold it at auction out from under me, but Friday night I'm going to meet someone in NYC to take a look at a 97 Type SH. 126k on it with recent (documented) dealership tune-up, new clutch, brakes, and tires. The guy claims he got the timing belt and water pump done at 105,000, but doesn't have the paperwork to prove that. No biggy, I'll inspect it when I get it home. He only wants 6k for it so I think it's a steal even if I have to do the timing belt and water pump. It's bone stock, never raced or modified, and it has only had one owner... Carfax confirms a clean history, and he claims it to run at 100% mechanical and electrical condition. It has faded (san marino red) paint on front bumper and rear spoiler, but I can live with that. For 6k you can't really complain too much lol. Thanks for all the help guys.

Here's some pics from Autotrader of the prospective buy.

Re: Urgent Value Question!

7500 is not bad , yeah bring in 7g cash and im sure he will bite

yeah timing and water pump all go hand in had do it all at the same time

remove the driver side motor mount to make room and start tearing it down , id have some one set the timing belt for you tho as you dont want to be out of timing and either blow your engine or have to do it all again

Re: Urgent Value Question!

7 G's are you guys crazy? I wouldn't even pay 6k unless it was flawless in perfect condition. I see them all the time from $5200-6500. $7500 is wayyy to much to spend on a car that is 13 years old with over 100k. Hold out and you will find one for a good deal like I did. $3200 cash. I know it's an auto and worth less, but I have every single part I need to convert it to a 5 speed sitting in my garage. Paid under $1000 for everything just haven't had time to do it. All I did was install the clutch pedal so far. My point being I'll end up owning the car for $4200.00 + a little blood and sweat. That's over 3 grand more than the dealer your talking about was asking.

Re: Urgent Value Question!

I bought mine for $4000 cnd. Front bumper had crack and windshield and needs new O2 but new brakes, timing belt/waterpump done, new full exhaust, new summer tires and car came with summer AND winter rims. Car is MINT.

In my opinion, it's somewhat cheap for a dealer but expensive for a car that's in USA. I'd assume the cars there are usually half the price or at least cheaper then Canada.
