Icon9 Car jumps harshly coming to a stop. Just had my transmission rebuilt???

i JUST had my 98 auto transmission rebuilt (yup, i know) and while the shifting seems to be much smoother, it is still harshly jumping forward when shifting down from 2 to 1 when stopping.

Could this be any other cause other than the transmission? People have suggested the engine mounts but the car does not jump if i put it in neutral before stopping. If that is the case, couldn't I rule out bad engine mounts?

Re: Car jumps harshly coming to a stop. Just had my transmission rebuilt???

im in the same boat. car jerks slightly when coming to a complete stop from any gear over 1st. had my all my mounts switched out but still does it. try getting a buddy to sit in the car with the hood open. have him shift through all the gears slowly (breaking and e-brake up please) as you look at the engine. if the engine hops its probably the mounts that have gone bad but i still wouldn't rule out the transmission going bad again. but apart from that you must understand the 5th gen auto transmission are known for going bad, hope that isnt the case for you tho.

maybe check the sensors on the front of the tranny, those get clogged and I believe they affect the auto clutch thing.

I will try that this weekend when i get the chance.

I had the transmission rebuilt... like this week. I just got it back today. I'm going to take it back in but I was hoping not to have my car kidnapped for another week if i could try another solution.

It developed a couple more issues that are semi-old issues as well. When turning a sharp left it delays shifting into second, and when it does, it surges... but this only happens when i am making a left turn from a stop.

Also coming off the highway into city driving- it will have the problem of pressing the gas but no extra power to the engine. It stays at about 20+mph no matter how much gas i give it... but the rpms aren't going up so that confuses me since that would not indicate its the tranny. I tried sports shifting it up but that doesn't help it kick in either.

If i only knew about the auto's before i bought this thing, i would have saved myself a lot of frustration and heartache!

tell me about it. when i first brought my car i did no research on the tranny or anything. the car started giving me more issues as time went on. front mount was bad. breaks pads, calipers needed to be changed. eventually i was met with the decision to sell the car or keep it. decided to keep it and so far its been worth it. just getting stuff done on the car feels good as your making progress with it. hopefully your not met with having to overhaul the tranny anytime soon or at all. regardless i would recommend getting the info you need. save up some money little by little and do the 5 speed. patience will help you find the parts cheap.

with the issues its giving you just try and get it looked at ASAP as just driving it around could be causing more damage without you even knowing. more damage = more money to pay up for repairs.

All the connectors to your trans you need to take apart and clean and put back togethe and make sure they snap good. had this problem with my auto after i got my motor preplaced. Had water in the connection and made it shift horible, jump bad, and more. clean all connections and see what happens. Hell go get a scan and see if anything comes back with your transmission connections that what we did to find the problem. fixed her right up

im gone post this again bc I feel its important, all your connections to the tranny need to be taking apart and cleaned. Be sure to look at each one very good to see if there is in fact anything in the plug. let me know what happens good luck

^thats what i would say as well, make sure you use electronic parts cleaner to clean out those connections, don't use throttle body or brake parts cleaner

Re: Car jumps harshly coming to a stop. Just had my transmission rebuilt???

I just had the CEL come on at lunch after another low power/surging acceleration issue. Went to autozone and pulled these 4 codes:
  • P0170
  • P0171
  • P0700
  • P1738

Looks like I will be taking it back into the transmission shop. I would think they would have cleaned the connectors if they were doing to rebuild? I will mention this when i take it back. These auto's are nightmares. I want to save up for a swap but I still have yet to find anyone I trust to do it in the Atlanta area.

yeah man its hard to find someone you know that you trust, I got lucky and found somebody and have him to any work that I cant do. Mostly because I dont have the time, storage, and tools to get the job done. I really dont think they would take the time to clean each connection before pluging them back in, I could be wrong though.

if you just got it rebuilt, take it back to the shop that did it and make them fix it.

Took the car back in and just got it back yesterday. Shifts like butter now and doesn't jump at all.... it was a shift solenoid they told me. They had it in and out on monday morning.

I will probably end up buying a 5spd down the road if i can find one in good shape (these cars are getting older and harder to find in really good shape) and sell this one off instead of doing a 5spd swap. Haven't made up my mind though. But for now, it runs like a dream.

^^^ good to know u got it taken care of. yeah a shift solenoid was the best guess lol
IMO, sell it and get a 5 speed.. rather than spending time and money doing the swap, or worse; paying someone else to do it. just send her off and find another one.. just my .02
