Horn Location

This may be a very stupid question, but it will be very helpful.

On the 5th gen prelude, there are two threaded holes on each side of the front subframe. One of the holes will have a horn mounted into it and the other will either be open or contained a bolt that holds nothing in. Going from the middle of the car, which hole has the horn mounted in it? Inner or outer?

00CDMLuder's prelude has the horns located in the outer holes positioning them closer to the headlights. I saw one picture of a 5th gen engine bay that appeared to have the horns positioned on the inner location and have linked it below.

Which location is factory?

Re: Horn Location

Thanks guys for all the input.

Ive been designing something special and test fitting a prototype in 00cdmluder's prelude for the past few weeks when we were able to get together. The designed in based off of his car (and his horn location) and I noticed the horn location issue when looking at the picture posted above.

The design is finished and I am about to start producing these parts (Im waiting on a part to show up to minimize the mess before I start)... Hope to unveil these this Friday, but we shall see.

Would it bother you guys to move the horns to the outer hole position as it does present better air flow into the radiator if you interested in the product? (or should I modify the design?)

Scott, throw up a pic of the prototype if you will and unveil the JTC Customs 5th Gen Cooling Plate!...

They will be cut in house out of thick aluminum (1/8") and be customizable... All plates will feature the JTC Customs logo, but for an additional fee we will offer the ability to add anything you want to your's..

Woooooooooooooot!

Cooling plates are so sexy.

I couldnt tell you if the horn is actually louder, but the design does direct more sound waves out of the muffling engine bay and theoretically should be (but thats not the point). And I still can't hear a few days after Scott honked his horn with me positioned inches from his front bumper.. Thanks Scott!

Scott and I are both thrilled with the final design for both functionality and simplicity. Its nothing like the few homemade cooling plates we have seen.

Re: Horn Location

Well that's great man. I'm really psyched about the plates. I'll definitely keep an eye out for them. I've always wanted one but never willing to pay the exorbitant market pricing.

Maybe you can make door sills too, lol. Those are hella overpriced and would probably sell well if privately made. But since "prelude" is probably trademarked by honda I'm not sure in the legalities.

Re: Horn Location

Lol wow.. I've never seen that.. Is it yours? It's definitely different than the one posted though

It's obviously custom.. I know the one made by jtc was not based off of any cooling plate. We just looked at the space and tried to find the best way to direct air while keeping it clean. The only other cooling plate I've seen for the 5th gen is carbon fiber and huge

Yep, did it awhile ago. Just thought it was funny because when I posted it up on pp.com I got a bunch of bashing besides 2 good comments. At least i'm not the only one that thinks it's a good design.

Everyone wants to cover the grill supports.... this design has function. Anything else is more for looks.

Thats very interesting. I like the design you came up with too. Might be the similarities with what we came up with. Completely functional and not bad looking to boot. Looks like it is a very thin sheet metal?

I wish I had seen this one before we started, it would have made decision making alot easier on placement at the front.

Re: Horn Location

Yeah, it was a quick mock-up. Relocating the horns to the center support made for an easier fitment. With the size of the sheet metal - I had to cut it at the funky angle at the top and corners. I'm in the middle of a cleaner version, as well as another design. The mock up only took a couple of hours to cut sand and paint.

thank you for the compliments :)

your welcome on the compliments. It actually looks pretty good.

Our main issue has been the horns if you havent noticed as far as whether to relocate or what with them. I've been waiting for opinions from several members here over the last few days before I put out the final design. Still havent figured out if the horn location should have bothered me at all.

Re: Horn Location

For me, it's just another thing to cut out if they're left in place. That's why I relocated them to the center pillar, completely out of the way. Took a bolt/nut and 5 minutes.

You can see them directly below the latch.

Agreed!

Are the holes threaded or are there holes down there already? BTW. I love the relocation. It makes wiring worries go away too.

The holes are not threaded. There is already an unused hole down there.

I basically went to the local hardware store and purchased an allenkey type screw with a grip on the head, with a locknut. that way I could easily grip it with a ratchet in the back and a 90 degree allenkey from the front. Since the hole is a tight spot beneath the ...(name has slipped my mind...) mounted to the front bumper as shown in the picture. It made it alot easier. I didn't have to cut any clips or anything for the horns, and I took off the one extension bracket to make them more even when mounted.

Ty again for the compliments :)

Darryl - I actually tossed Jake my extra screw and nut, if you're down near his work swing in and check it out since he doesn't have a plate blocking it lol

I might go stalk him down there soon. weather is turning a bit and I need some car products. plus the kirkwood highway store is terrible.
