Front Windshield - How Many Stars Before You..

How many stars, chips, or cracks did you have before you replaced your front windshield?

I ask because I had 6 stars and now have 7 thanks to some lazy construction worker not cleaning off the tractor covered in dirt then putting on a flat bed on the highway.

My insurance will pay for the repair but I just have so many stars and little nicks I am thinking of having it replaced @ my expense. If you have had yours replaced did you go with OEM which is always higher priced or did you go with a generic brand with the same green tint etc? Did you do the work yourself or have a professional? Did you or the pro also replace the molding?

If you've never done it before, get a professional to do it. It's not as easy as you think and you only get one chance to get it lined up and sealed properly.

If you're insurance covers it you just have to find a windshield place that is willing to declare your current windshield unsafe, if one of the chips/cracks is in front of the driver then most places should be happy to do that.

definitely get it replaced. mine looked like hell after my windshield smashed it in and i got it replaced for $175. they took off the molding and put it back on. i dont see why u would need to replace it unless u really messed it up somehow or something happens taking it off. and definitely have a professional do it so if it leeks its under warrenty

Insurance will only cover the star repair, if I want it replaced I have a deduct of $500 so it would be pointless to ask them.

I'll assume you didn't get an OEM since it was so cheap? Do you notice any difference in the new glass from the old? (besides the damage being gone)

Re: Front Windshield - How Many Stars Before You..

I got mine replaced. Went from a small star crack to two star cracks connecting. Then it just kinda went across the whole windshield. I paid myself. No insurance will pay for my crack... It was $210 installed. I don't want or need OEM. I don't notice any different and if this cracks it won't be such a kick in the azz if I have to replace this as well.

Re: Front Windshield - How Many Stars Before You..

Im thinking of getting mine redone also. Previous owner used crappy wiper blades and it scratched the crap outta the glass. So now at night especially in the rain, the lights and water reflect the scratches so much I cant see /:

Re: Front Windshield - How Many Stars Before You..

get an online quote... try many different places and pit them against each other. I ended up going with Safelite and my out of pocket expense was only $180 ( because I don't have comprehensive insurance- I own my car outright and don't need to pay for crap I may never use)
HOWEVER, IF you are paying for your car through a bank, then the loan requires you to have full coverage. No matter your deductible, there ARE glass companies out there that will "eat" the deductible to get your business. When I had my POS Subaru I went this same route and it was $0 out of my pocket.

Re: Front Windshield - How Many Stars Before You..

I own my prelude but keep it full coverage just in case.

I priced 3 places and like what you found safelite was the cheapest $190 compared to $220-240.

Re: Front Windshield - How Many Stars Before You..

If you're worried about it then replace it. Stars and chips can turn into large cracks very quickly, and you don't want a large crack if you're doing 70mph on a highway. Things like thermal expansion and contraction can cause the star to become a crack, as could hitting a bump at speed.

We had a rental car in Florida and got a stone chip about 50-70mm from the top of the windshield, parked the car overnight in the hotel lot, then picked it up the next morning with a 150mm crack.

Re: Front Windshield - How Many Stars Before You..

Go aftermarket man. There is no need to go with oem on something like that and honestly sometimes oem can be as bad as a bad aftermarket. I had to have the windsheild replaced in my 03 accord and went with oem and we had to go thru 3 oem windsheilds because they all had warpage issues. finally got one that was striaght but it took forever.
