5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

Hello all,

My mom wants me to help her make educated decisions when it comes to modding her 2000 Honda Prelude SE with the tiptronic automatic transmission. She wants to upgrade her brakes (she feels it's a weak point in the Prelude's design), and I've done minimal research so far on the subject. I found the twin piston brake conversion thread which uses parts from a 1995 Legend GS so far other than the usual suspects for brake kits.

What do the PZ experts suggest for DD use with mild performance use?

Re: 5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

You can always upgrade to a big brake kit but this also effects the weight of the car along with the rim size if your running stock rims. To add another cars brakes to a Prelude, not sure.

Icon14 UPGRADE: YOU ALREADY GOT IT

The upgraded 11.1" front brakes on your 5th gen Prelude and the 4th gen VTEC Prelude came from the 600 lb heaver (3516 lbs ) Acura Legend and provide 11% more braking force and very little fade. I would suggest that you take your Prelude to a Honda shop and have them bleed your brake system and check the condition of the brake rotors and pads . Because the brakes on your Prelude are over sized , they can go a very long way before the pads start to wear to the point that they start making noise but its long life does not mean that they should not be checked from time to time .

Re: 5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

Sorry, I should have included that she has a set of summer rims and tires, however during winter driving she uses her stock rims. Are there any brake kits available that fit under stock wheels? And if so, can anyone offer insight on their experience / opinion on their performance value?

Re: 5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

Do I sense you have an STi???

Brembo blanks + your choice of good pads = plenty sufficient for a DD with an amazing brake feel.

Hahaha, yes, and I <3 it so much. Mine's stage 2 too, but running 19psi with a TBE and other goodies (see my new member intro thread for pics & details).

She just said she wants upgraded brakes, but I'm not sure if that means she wants a big brake kit, or just a better brake feel under performance driving. Personally, a big brake kit would be overkill and under-utilised for her, but would look pretty sexy behind some nice rims.

Re: 5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

Hawk HPS pads get great reviews, I plan to put them on mine sometime soon. Coupled with some blanks or slotted rotors and stainless brakelines and you'll be set.

The bb6 has great brakes as it is. Unless your mother is an ultra agressive autocrosser or she takes her lude to the track for day long sessions I would stick with oem size upgraded rotors and pads. A big brake kit would not be worth the money and our stock rims will not fit with big brakes.

Re: 5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

I just ordered brembo replacement off ebay for 65 bucks on the front, and hawk hps pads from parts geek for 60bucks not 20 minutes ago. A little bit a dough for brakes but i have a feeling they are gonna be sicker than any no name cross drill and ebc pad combo lol. my point is the op that high quality oem size a good bet and stainless lines. i want them real bad they make a huge difference. I drove an older SHO with those lines and it was great.

Re: 5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

On my last Prelude, I had VTEC calipers with Brembo blanks, Hawk HP + pads (1 step below their racing compounds), and stainless steel brake lines. It is PLENTY of braking power (my car was full weight), trust me. If she's wanting a big brake kit or something along those lines, try to talk her out of it. They are a complete waste of money unless you are building an all-out balls to the wall purpose built track car.

-Was that setup really that good on your car? I never spent that much on this cars brakes. I hope it'll be worth it. I'm looking into tires for my old 17's. Strong brakes need good rubber to! Is her car modded or does she drive it like she stole it?

Re: 5th gen - Upgrade brakes?

As I mentioned earlier, she has a set of summer wheels and tires, but she didn't consult me on the tire choice, so I can imagine is a mild performance tire with a good wear rating. She enjoys performance driving here and there, but she definitely doesn't drive it like she stole it all the time; I'm hoping to get her out to some auto-x event this summer with her new setup!

I'm actually in Canada.

I think I'm going to get her to go with the Brembo blanks and Hawk HP pads. It's good to know that the big brake kits won't work with stock wheels, and I know my mom wouldn't want that knowing her wheels wouldn't fit.

Brembo Blanks and Hawk HPS pads. The HP+ are more of an auto x pad and will dust a lot along with squealing.

slotted rotors FTW!

I have stock diameter slotted rotors and hawk HP pads on my car and braking is more than sufficient. SS brake lines are a good upgrade for a firmer pedal feel as well. big brake kits are a waste of money for cars without major modification.
