Low Fuel Light

Hey guys I have had my prelude for about 5 days now and something thats bothering me is that the low fuel light is not lighting up. The gauge has gone to E and even below E but it has not ever been lit. Anyone have any suggestions? When I bought the car the tank had maybe about 1 1/2 to 2 gallons, 3 at tops of fuel so far I've put gas in it twice it was about $3.79 one time for $13 and the second for $10. So that its about 6 gallons and with the initial at least I could have 8 gallons at most I could have either 8 or 9. I have traveled around 240 or 260 miles. See how this worries me? So when is the light supposed to come on? I mean I still have to change my spark plugs, I have to clean my egr valve ports and get new plugs, change the engine oil, as well as tranny oil..

That part is very confusing to say the least. Mind rephrasing it for me? and why do you need the light? you see your car is getting close to E and you fill up with gas, easy enough eh?

Re: Low Fuel Light

let me put it in simple terms. I am afraid my light does not work, hence my car will run out of gas without me knowing it. I just said that I had about 8-9 gallons of gas over those 240 or so miles. Just calculating the MPG. If you do that math that's about 27-29 MPG.

Yes I believe that's how most cars are made... My issue is does my light work or not. As you can see I stated why I think it doesn't work. I am getting way too high MPG. Is it normal for your fuel gauge to be under E and your light not to light up? That's all I'm trying to figure out. You can tell me when your light becomes lit.

Re: Low Fuel Light

Try filling your car all the way up with gas and then calculate how your mpg's by how much gas you put in the next time you fill up with gas. I still don't get why you care about the light... When you get close to E fill up you shouldn't need a light to tell you when to fill up with gas. I never had a light in my 1997 Jeep Cherokee and I never ran out of gas.

Re: Low Fuel Light

i think you only have like 15-20 miles worth of gas left when the light kicks on. not very far and my light kicks on and off when im low. no big deal, just means its time to empty my wallet lol

Re: Low Fuel Light

the indicator should light up for about a second, as do all your other gauge lights, when you initially start your car.
My question to you is... does the happen?
Does your Brake light come on when you pull your e-brake?
Does your CEL light after starting your car? You said you have EGR issues..is your CEL on all the time?

these are just little incandescent lights, it may be burnt out????

I have looked for the light when I start up my car it isn't lit. My brake light does indeed come on when I pull my e-brake. My CEL is constantly on due to my EGR issues, I have checked the codes and I only get one, P0401 which is the EGR issue only. It could be my light not turning on, and my main problem is I am almost broke I have no money for gas so I can't just refill every time it's low I'd rather see the little light turn on.

Also this may be off topic but the lights lighting up my climate control also do not work, I doubt they are connected but it could show that since those don't work there could be other lights that do not work.

Re: Low Fuel Light

sounds like the fuel warning light is burnt out. take it out and put an ohm meter across the leads. If you don't have access to a meter, take a known working lamp out (brake light) and temporarily put in the fuel lights place. Start the car... does it light up now?

Well I am going to have to take out my whole cluster so that will most likely be tomorrow as it's pretty late. I will get back to you.

Re: Low Fuel Light

Go buy the cluster light bulb. Take apart your cluster (easy as hell. done it 3 times and can pull it in and out within 2 minutes) and replace the bulb. If you don't want to buy a new bulb take one from another light and check and see if it works. If it doesn't you might have something more serious.

Same as mine. i've brought my gas down low enough just for kicks and giggles to see if it lights up. but nada! i'm fine with it though, my gas never see's below the quarter line.

Re: Low Fuel Light

The low fuel lights on every Prelude built are notoriously fickle. I've seen them come on with almost a quarter tank, and seen them not come on with the guage pegged on E for miles. A waste of space on the instrument panel.

Re: Low Fuel Light

Here is my issue like most people, I have little to no money. You keep asking why I need it to light. It's so I don't fill up my tank when I don't need to. I don't want to go begging around for money from my parents if I have gas. If I take out that bulb do I have to solder it or is it built like the climate control lights where you just simply plug it in?

Re: Low Fuel Light

I understand you don't have money for gas and probably don't have money for a new light.

But understand this, letting the gas get so low that light needs to come on or is below the E mark is not good for you or the car. You can be stranded somewhere and have to have someone bring you gas or get towed (cost more $$). Your car could have lower mpg because it's sucking up the gunk from the bottom of the tank (losing $$). There are a lot of reason to keep the tank above the 1/4 mark and you should consider them.

To answer your question about the bulb being removed, you don't need to solder it or anything but take the bulb out/swap it.

Honda Prelude - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
and the size of the tank shouldn't affect your mpg. just divide how many miles you put on the trip odometer by how much gas you put in the tank when you fill up.

Possible burnt out bulb like said. I never let any of my cars get anywhere near E. I prefer not to replace a fried out fuel pump.

From what I've heard. It's actually better and more fuel efficient to keep your tank topped up. Therefore, you'll save money when you keep your tank filled...

Re: Low Fuel Light

If you think the light is burned out - let it go to "E" maybe just below - bring a gallon or two of gas JUST incase, and be near a gas station.

Park on the hill once in BOTH directions
(i can't remember which way you need to be to test the indicator)

Your light WILL go on if you're on a steep enough hill at some point. I say park because it wont come on instantly so you need to actually stop the car and keep it running. Again, try parking facing downward and once facing upward - because i can't remember XD

I get around 280 miles to a tank on average. Most likely your bulb is burnt out.

Yes I agree my light is most likely burnt out, I just wanted to know. If it wasn't I would have kept driving but seeing as it is I will know now to fill it up when it goes below 1/4th full thanks.

Re: Low Fuel Light

The light comes on when there are 15 litres left in the tank. That's 2.7 Gallons, or 3.9G for those in the US.

The fuel gauge itself is a law unto itself. I've had it under the E, and driven like that for 100km, and still put 12L into the tank.
