Re: First mods?

Headers: RMF, SMSP, and HyTech are going to be your best bet. The HyTech will be easiest to find. The cheaper (DC, Megan, Etc.) headers are basically OEM copies so they don't really do much for you.

Shocks: Most people go for Koni Yellows or KYB AGX's. If you want solid springs for them, Eibach, Tein, H&R, and many other companies make good products. If you want coilover sleeves, Ground Controls are probably the most popular choice, but Skunk2 makes good units as well. If you want a FULL coilover setup, there are quite a few good options. Tein, Eibach, Tanabe, Zeal, D2, KSport, and many other companies all provide you with options.

I would advise that you do lots of research before committing so much money to something. There's lots of information out there (let alone PLENTY on this site alone). Make good use of it!

Icon14 An argument for maintaining a stock configuration

Shocks? (illumina, etc), or something else?
Your 5th gen Prelude has been refined to the point that basic engine mods do not produced enough real world gains to be worth the effort.Lets look at the two most common mods .

1: Intake:

Please consider these points before you waste your money.

1: Your stock intake is a CAI intake .
2:When you consider that a 4cyl engine only has 1 intake runner demanding air at any time combined with the fact that the air intake piping is much larger then any single runner , the stock intake is not restrictive. Some types of intakes can effect the tuning of the engine by raising the engines power band somewhat given a little more top end power at the expense of mid/low rpm torque and throttle response. This is not a good trade off when you have a 4cyl engine trying to move a 3000 lb car.
3:You can improve throttle response and mid rpm power it little by getting a Honda engineered OEM TYPE S intake that uses a 2nd air box just before the throttle body to influence the tunning of the engine air pulses in a positive way. Also when accelerating hard , if you only hold the accelerator pedal down 3/4 to 4/5 of the way until the VTEC engages that also seems to give a boost to mid rpm power.
4:The stock intake has a valve at its input that gives the ecu the ability to tweak the intakes response an effectively tune the intake for the range of rpms your operating at which helps a lot with low/mid rpm power and fuel economy. .No aftermarket intake does that.
5: For a sound that has a lower pitch while not turning your intake into cop
bait, all you need to do is plug the passageway leading to the resonator box thats below the air filter box. Just temporally remove the funnel at the bottom of the air filter box and look down the hole in the bottom to see what needs to be plugged.

Check out this write up below from a UK web site.

Here is where you can get a TYPES S INTAKE.

JDM Prelude Type S Dynamic Air Intake Kit 220HP BB6 H22A S Spec

2: Exhaust:

The 5th gen Prelude comes equipped with a true 4-2 1 header thats received an additional dose of Honda engineering compared to the header on the 4th gen Prelude. I not saying that their are not any aftermarket headers that produce more power but the magnitude of the improvement that a aftermarket header gives to a 5th gen Prelude is not nearly as great as on older models of the Prelude and such improvement obtained is a a real world sense trifling and of no real value.

Picture comparing the header on the 5th gen Prelude to the primitive header on the 3rd gen Prelude.

3rd gen header:

5th gen header (True 4-2-1 header):

Picture showing the difference between the 4th and the improved 5th gen VTEC header:

Unless your willing to spend a lot of money for a turbo or supercharger along with a possible engine rebuild , getting additional hp gains out of your engine can only be obtained by improving your driving technique as detailed in the equation below.
H22a4 output =F(Driver Ability).
If you can develop your driving skills such that on most corners you take you are able to keep your speed at or above about 40 mile/hr, you will keep the engine on the cam and a satisfying rush of power will come as you exit corners .

On to the subject of handling improvements. If you are planning on auto crossing your car then suspension mods may be the thing for you. If your like 99.9% of the people who only drive only on the street ,the stock 5th gen Prelude handling capabilities are more then adequate for any on street situation because of government road building standards. People who can't rotate their 5th gen Preludes on the street are in many cases blaming their cars for their lack of driving ability.Their are also some back yard mechanics who get a thrill out of tinkering with things and use their car as something like an adult tinker toy.Their handling enhancements in many cases don't really relate to their real life, on the street driving needs and in some cases result in damaging strikes with the road.So if your not going to track your car , just take the money and use it to buy gas and practice driving your car because the Prelude is a drivers car.People who can't drive should get a car with a lot of low rpm torque like a Mustang because such a car can better compensate for driver deficiency's when exiting corners.

Re: First mods?

i would say a nice exhaust system, my vote is vibrant, and have a shop do the piping for you. it seems now a days cai systems are not worth it unless its a V2 AEM. short throws of some kind are a really nice addition IMO. And i imagine other folks here will agree. Me personally ive been looking into how to lighten my car. To me that seems like a cheap way to gain real world acceleration. Good luck. There is a lot of great knowledge here, just look around and people arent shy to chime in!

Re: First mods?

Thanks for the help guys. Now, since my header and intake theory are debunk (well, type S is on now), what type of exhaust kit would be good. I'd like the nice low pitched sound, but not too loud. I'm thinking the mugen kit for kingsmotorsports

Also, are there any short shifters for the prelude. PSPEC isn't making them anymore..

I would say suspension or I/H/E (intake header and exhaust). That is if ur car is in good condition. Do whats needed before whats wanted lol

Re: First mods?

In my opinion you'll never have enough maintenance so save your money and do as much fixable maintenance as possible. Your shocks will probably blow later on so that'll have to be done. Check your header, if you have a leak or anything. If it looks like good condition don't bother unless ur willing to drop over a G for a decent header. If your exhaust doesn't have issues I'd hold off and do the exhaust and header together.

Re: First mods?

Thanks for all the reccomendations guys. When i get the lude, i wont be doin this right away, but im a bit cheap. With a OBX twin loop + 2.5 pipin + stock header + a cat (what is that ?) + professional installation have a nice sound? I mean not rice, but decent

exactly, what is the difference between a CAT and resonator?

also, please, no hatin', i don't want to have a locked thread

A cat is a pollution control device thats in line with the exhaust path that acts to turn nasty combustion byproducts into harmless gasses .

A resonator is a device that is put in line with the exhaust path that is a tool used by the engineers to tune your exhaust system to the exhaust pulses coming from the engine.

Item #2 is the cat and the tank cylinder in the exhaust path adjacent to part #11 in the exhaust path is the resonator that acts to fine tune the exhaust system. This part illustrates the fact that you don't have to go to Mugan to get an exhaust thats tuned to the rest of the engine for performance because you already have a Honda engineered one unless your into the hype or a unique sound.

Uhhhh... You don't even have the prelude yet? I wouldn't even bother doing performance mods until you know all the maintenance is done.... especially since you don't have it yet.

Re: First mods?

Honestly, the first thing i would do before any bolt ons other than maybe a CAI or that cool stock looking intake someone had on here (thinking about getting that)

The FIRST thing YOU should do is maintenance.. to the fullest before u start adding stuff to make it faster u want your car in tip top shape!

Re: First mods?

Thanks for the recommendations guys. And, of course, i will preform ALL maintenance prior to any mods :)

Last question: what would be a good/ decent 2.5" resonator that wouldn't break the bank. And if i go with a twin loop, what size should the res be?
