charging problem help!!

whats up guys im new to the forums ive had 2 preludes before both 4th gens, i just picked up a 5th gen last night for a daily driver, its a 2000 and its in really good shape but driving me crazy!! the battery light was on and the lights have been dimming and its a fairly new battery so obviously i replaced the alternator, when doing this i noticed that someone spliced in the pigtail harness from a 4th gen prelude (its the round plug not the square one the 5th gens have), there are 4 wires to this connector not including the main power wire going to the alternator, BRAND NEW ALTERNATOR BENCH TESTED IN FRONT OF ME is not showing that its charging my battery on the multimeter and the battery light is still on, car reads 12v when off and once started drops to about 8.5v and keeps dropping until it dies, I am completely stumped on what to do now all fuses are fine, someone please point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: white and green wire coming from the pigtail of the alternator harness that runs to the ecu keeps shorting out and blowing the ECU fuse in the car, which kills the alternator amongst other things, my question is is there anything that could be causing this short? what else is tied into this circuit? thanks!!

Dan

Hmmm, sounds like you need to replace some wires to me...

Don't really know how to help though. BUMP

Re: charging problem help!!

def sounds like something is shorting out, if someone did some weird splicing like you said they had, then chances are either that the wiring is not soldered like it should be, or some insulation has worn off somewhere in that circuit and its shorting it out causing the fuse to blow. If it were me, I would look around the area where you said that it had been spliced, if the wires are not soldered together it could be causing some serious resistance in the circuit and that may be your problem right there, and really if something from a 4th gen is there or a wrong connector (not sure exactly what you meant) then I would just go ahead and get the right wiring for your 5th gen, probably save you some time and trouble. Just look around and let us know what you find man, good luck

well i ended up ripping the whole dash off and found that the black and yellow wire coming from the ecu harness fried up to bare metal and touched a bunch of other wires, after a full day of re wiring and soldering its fixed, thanks guys
