lost keys, new key isnt working

okay heres the issue. I lost my only key for my lude at a ski resort last night, so i went to my local honda dealer and they gave me the key code to take to a lock store because they didnt have any key blanks for my car. So i got a key made from the lock store and the key will turn the power on for the car will go to the crank position but will not start the car. Any ideas? i really need to figure this out!!

Re: lost keys, new key isnt working

Well the original key has a chip. I hope your new key has one as well. Also, there's an ignition recall. U could check and see if that's been done yet.

97+ Prelude's have immobilzers. I'm pretty sure it's chipped. Anyone else wanna confirm this?

Re: lost keys, new key isnt working

yeah 97-01 should have a chip in...any locksmith cutting a key without a chip will only turn the power on but will not start because the computer is not getting a signal frm the chip thats suppose to be on the key. Therefore not cranking ur car

Re: lost keys, new key isnt working

Sounds like the new key needs to be programmed to the immoblizer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it will be pretty expensive without the red key or a working key to copy the code.

They don't need the red key. As long as you have a key that works, they can replicate it.

Re: lost keys, new key isnt working

If the key is chipped, then the new one should also be the same. My dad has a Chevy. Lumina and when he lost the key the people from the dealer asked him.for some code and gave him another key. Guessing that all chipped key are the same.

The little green key that flashes (or should flash) on your cluster when you take the key out means immobilizer is on.

I don't think they're gonna eat the cost of a chip key and time to program it, nor the tow to get the car there. I know on some ECU's you can just remove the immobilizer circuit and live with the green key light on all the time

Re: lost keys, new key isnt working

well the place that you took the key to get cut doesn't have to ability to program the key for you so unless the dealership that gave you the key code programmed the key to your car before you got it cut you'll have to have it programmed otherwise it will never start your car. did the dealership give you a key that has the big black plastic at the top with the "H" for honda emblem on it? because the chip is inside that black plastic. maybe the dealership thought you just needed a key to open your door or something, i don't know why they would tell you to go and get a key cut when they know it won't start your car without being programmed

Re: lost keys, new key isnt working

see i had no idea that the key was chipped and i went to the dealership and they looked everything up not saying anything about a chip, and they were all out of blank keys so they called a locksmith place who said they had the keys and they cut one for me. idk if the dealer knew about the chip and didnt tell me or what bc i clearly stated that i lost the only key and needed one to start the car. im going back today to see what they can do for me.

how much did the new ignition cylinder run you? if it comes down to it i might have to end up doing that if the dealer cant help me.

Re: lost keys, new key isnt working

without a red key you are up the creek. get a spare and keep it somewhere safe. if you lose your only key you are out of luck. black keys are chipped and programmed and linked through your ecu and immobilizer. you can program the chip in the key to your hearts content but you cannot duplicate an existing key. you program the blank, then program the car to accept that key. to get your car into programming mode you need the red/master key. without a red key(which is not replaceable by god himself) you will never be able to program a new key to that car. hence if your key breaks or wears out, you can use a copy and tape the black chipped part of your old key to it and it will work. if you lose the black key, then you need a red key, red keys come in a set with the ignition and immobolizer and you still need to worry about the door locks. find a honda tech that was around in the late 90's. some dealers actually kept the red keys as a courtesy to new owners so they wouldnt lose them. also, some dealers i talked to told the new owners to hide them in the car. like seriously hide. as in under the carpet, in with the wheel jack, in the seat. unfortunately they were often forgotten there and never used and second owners were never even told about them. if you know any of the previous owners, its worth your time to get a hold of them.
