tach needle f'ed up

I took the cluster out to sand off the orange backing and i took the needles off. When i put them back on, i went up to calibrate them with the car on and the tach is acting funny. The other gauges are fine, but the tach either doesnt work or goes straight to like 6k rpm. Anyone have any ideas, like mabye i got it dirty or something. Seems to be functioning, but just not correctly.

Any help would be appreciated. And if it looks like i need a new potentiometer does anyone have an extra cluster?

Re: tach needle f'ed up

All my needles were messed up after I did my LED swap. It was a lot of trial and error for me. It seemed like when you push the needles in all the way you need to back them out a little. My tack was sticky as it was revving up until I backed the needle out some. Just left the plastic off and was messing with it while the car was on. Hope this helps a little.

Re: tach needle f'ed up

Ok, so i cleaned the connectors and the potentiometer, and the tach does "work" but it spins backward and it just kinda moves, but with no accuracy. very random. POO!

Anyone think of anything?

Re: tach needle f'ed up

......same here......I got the others no problem. I think when you re adhere the face to the plastic piece the alignment is off minutely. Mine operates properly but sticks. There needs to be zero friction because it is not a strong motor that moves them.

If I cant fix it and make it right I'm just gonna say piss on it and fab an autometer gauge panel

Re: tach needle f'ed up

I thought about doing the same thing. Depending on the price of a new cluster i will probably do that as i can basically buy one piece at a time if need be. Would have to measure of coarse.

Re: tach needle f'ed up

I looked into it and its not cheap. To get nice gauges of any brand you're in the $600+ neck of the woods. By I ooked and if you get 5" tach and speedo you can possibly get 4 2 1/8" in as well.

Re: tach needle f'ed up

Pretty sure that's what happened. The speedo needle pulled off the little metal shaft and its fine. The shaft pulled out of the coil on the tach.

Re: tach needle f'ed up

the the shaft did pull out of the coil on the tach yes, but i guess i just dont understand why it would make it totally useless. I have been checking into gauges and im not going to pay as i saw it $470 bucks for gauges when i can buy a whole cluster for a lot cheaper. Anyone have an extra cluster or even just the tach and water temp section they can part with?
