At least that's the way the dealerships do it from what I've heard. Might as well give it a shot.

I dunno a mailbox and two trees hit the direct center of my front bumper support putting a giant dent in it. I still have airbags.

Re: Can you drive with disabled airbags?

Only thing to be cautious of is if you are injured in an accident, insurance companies can deny a claim if you have disabled a safety system. I kinda see where they are coming from there....but my 74 chevy didn't have air bags or even a shoulder belt for that matter, so aren't we already doing better at protecting ourselves against injury.

Well I mean until I can afford to replace the airbags, they've already been deployed at this point.

I hear ya there. They are certainly not cheap. Just one of those dumb technicalities no one thinks of. I have a passengers side from a 93 I would hook you up with cheap if it would help you out. Steering wheel bad is blown tho.

I don't understand why you would want to do that unless u have a child in the passenger seat. A lot of newer cars allow you to disable the air bags right from inside the cabin. Are you trying to put in an aftermarket steering wheel?

You must not have read that his airbags are deployed already...

To the OP. Yes... You can drive your car without them It doesn't all of a sudden become immobile because they deployed... and since they are deployed they are already disabled so I see no reason for you to do anything.

What year is your car?

Re: Can you drive with disabled airbags?

I picked up my airbag from a local junk yard and my steering wheel from this junk yard off ebay. It was only like $80. I might wanna change it to the AP1 wheel later on though.

its like driving a street bike around. I survived riding a gsxr600 everyday for a year and I mean every day, it was the only thing I had for transportation. just drive safe no worries. plus I dont think you will be doing over 160 and splitting cars lol. air bags are overrated

Re: Can you drive with disabled airbags?

in my state and ny, i know its illegal to buy/sell a used airbag. big fine.

does the SRS light come on after they are dissabled? im sure if you took it to get inspected, they wouldnt allow it to pass with that red light on. red is worse than yellow.

Can you drive without airbags?!?!...
Can you walk without undies?!?! Sure you can!!! You should wear them at all times like you should have ur airbags at all times but who is to say that you can't function without undies one drunken night?!?!

My bags blew from a accident back in June!!! Bought bags from a junkyard in PA from Ebay!!! He had paperwork and VIN# from the Lude it came off of!!!

The SRS light is on and gonna get it flashed to reset it!!!

Well in the province of Ontario it's illegal to sell a car without an airbag. It can be off the car but the seller must provide one. That being said, when I bought the car, he didn't have an airbag cuz he had this momo aftermarket steering wheel that I really didn't like so I bought one before I bought the car. Simple as that.

You can reset your SRS light by shorting something. I did it myself. Better then going to the dealers and having them do it for a leg.

Re: Can you drive with disabled airbags?

i did a mess of troubleshooting my srs system last fall, if the system has been deployed then a permanent code is stored in the srs module. must be replaced. if you really want the light out, you need to replace the module but you can get away with dummy clips that attach to the airbag harness that trick the module to think you have a fully functional airbag in place. practical for an aftermarket wheel without bags.

Thanks for all the information! If I pay to have someone reset my SRS do I need to have new airbags installed first?

check with your local DMV, cause every state is different. With my 00 Prelude, I had it rebuilt with no air bags, just had the covers and it passed inspection just fine. I still don't have air bags in this car and I've had it for about 7 years now
