Prelude Newbie

Hey guys, I'm a Prelude newbie, actually a Honda newbie in general!

I'm in the process of getting a 99 Lude, 103,000 miles on it, 5 spd, pretty much bone stock (which is how i'd prefer it since I want to do everything to it myself), and the guy wants 7.5k.

I'm gonna try to get him down to around 7 even, but to be honest with you, for where I live that is a steal. Most 5th gen ludes in my area (New Jersey) go for 8-12k, so the 7,500 is still a steal for me.

Anyway, here's my scenario. I figure that since the car is right around 100,000 miles anyway, it's time to replace most of my valve train as soon as I can, I'm sure that it's all original since there aren't even any bolt on mods. While I have it all opened up, I'd like to replace the cams with some Skunk2 street Stage II cams. My question is basically this... if I decide to replace the cams with the Skunk2 cams, should I also get third party aftermarket Valves and springs? or would it be ok to replace them with OEM parts.

Also, if I were to start putting JDM/European parts instead in there, which would be better? Accord Euro R, or JDM 'Lude type S parts?

Last but not least, I had heard before from someone (it might have been on the San Fran Prelude Owners forum) that putting JDM Type S Cams in a USDM head would cause the USDM Valves to interfere with the pistons. Is this true? I think he was claiming that the Type S Cam Lobes had too much lift and would push the valves into the path of the pistons. I don't know whether I believe it or not tho because I only saw it once, and haven't been able to find info about it anywhere. Any info/opinions would be great guys! Thanks!

1 - welcome

2 - 7.5 aint bad at all for a 5th gen w/ 103K, but if you can get it for 7K.. more power to ya

3 - where are you in jersey? i'm in morris county, and we have a BUNCH of tri-staters here!

4 - you shouldn't need to upgrade the valvetrain UNLESS the timing belt broke! if it hasn't been changed, that should be the first thing on your to do list, along with water pump and balancer belt. but if you have money to burn and wanna do the valvetrain, go for it.

5/6 - its up to you whether you want the euro r parts or type s. theres SO many different combinations of parts in motors that hte possibilities are endless. but you also hafta remember if you pick the wrong comibination of cams pistons and rods, you DO run the risk of slamming the pistons into the valves, so you hafta choose your parts wisely young grasshopper

Yeah 7500 is good enough for me if I can't get him down. The only thing I don't like about it is it's Milano Red, I prefer Premium White Pearl or Nighthawk Black Pearl, or even Crystal Blue... but I guess I can't complain too much, I can always paint it later!

I'm from Riverton, it's a little historic town directly across the Deleware River from Philadelphia in Burlington County. I swear man, I hardly ever see 5th gen ludes where I live... like maybe once or twice a year... but now since I've been trying to find a 5th gen lude in my price range for like the past 2 or 3 months, I see them EVERYWHERE. It's like God's way of teasing me lol. Last saturday I took a look at a 2000 lude for $8995... the a-hole wanted to charge me like 30 percent interest on a loan over 5 years... he wanted 250 a month even with a 2000 dollar down payment. Needless to say I took a walk on that guy. I thought all my hopes were crushed... then all of a sudden last night I was driving through Palmyra (one town over, like half a mile from my house), and I see this red 5th gen in the local used car lot. I didn't get my hopes up because I figured it would either be out of my price range or an automatic (I refuse to buy an automatic). Got out and looked, and by some form of luck it was exactly what I wanted: 5 speed, bone stock. The guy is only sellin it for 7500 because he's a resailer, he sells his cars in a matter of like 2 days to other dealers at auctions. Luckily for me I saw the car on the same day it hit the lot. Now I just gotta hope that I can get this guy to work with me on the financing and/or find someone to co-sign for me. It's hard to get loans when your 22 years old, fresh out of school, and have good credit... but no history. I have like a 700 credit score, but I only have one piece of credit so no one wants to take a chance on me. But how are you supposed to build credit if no one will take a chance on you!? Catch-22.

Anyway, I'm done rambling for now. I'm glad to be a part of the forums now, thanks for the welcome. I'll try to get a few pics of it up here if/when I do buy it. Thanks again.

Thanks bro. I'll know by later tonight if it's gonna happen or not, I'll be sure to post it on here.

One question while I'm here. I know the benefit of buying a custom header over the shxty DC ones or the ebay ones... but does anyone know anything about Fujitsubo?

I've heard really good things about the Fujitsubo header for the H22A4. I've heard them compared to Mugen even. They cost about 970 dollars I think and you can only get them from boomplustoys.net .

here's a link to a picture of them (they are beautiful).

boomplustoys.net/Fujitsubo/images/superex/nonbv-bb1-01.jpg

970 is a lot of money for a non-custom, non-mugen, non-spoon header... but it sure as hell beats the damn near 4000 it costs for the Fujitsubo headers they make for the NSX! :-P

Then again, I assume that if you can afford an NSX, you can afford 4000 dollar headers.

Like i tell everyone that buys parts on ebay 1. You get what you pay for 2. you dont get the same store warantee 3. faulsified ads not new possibly used parts for sale as new parts. 4. pay pal scam they will email you asking for card info cause they didnt recive properly if you send you hve been scammed. they like to tkae peoples money :-/

Im runnnig with mugen headers 4-1 cost me 1k for them well worth the money bigger hp gain. DC sports are minimal hp gain headers i like them but i dont tell people to get them. I would say go to king motorsport and buy mugen headers!!! well worth the money and the warantee.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I didn't say anything about buying ebay headers.. or dc headers...

I was asking if anyone knew anything about the Fujitsubo header? I've heard lots of good things about them, and from what I understand they have been around for a while and are popular in overseas markets. I'm just wondering if anyone is running them. I know that Mugen's are proven to be good cuz, well they are Mugen :-P.

alright alright , here it is ..... fujitsubo is basicly the same as mugen some minor details that are different include design and width of pipes. I think they are basicly the same headers though.

Well it looks like everything is gonna work out. I got approved for the loan today. I should have the check in the mail by tomorrow or Saturday at the latest, and hopefully I'll be driving it by Saturday as long as I can afford the first insurance payment after the money I'm dropping on the car. It's pretty clean too. The paint has some blemishes (which is ok because I want to paint it the OEM Nighthawk Black Pearl at some point anyway), the headlight covers look kind of dirty/worn from age, and the chrome on 2 or 3 of the wheels seem to be flaking a little bit. Other than that it looks good... clean carfax, no dents, looks to be bone stock. The blemishes aren't that big of a deal to me anyway, like I said I eventually want to paint it, I'll be changing the rims out ASAP, and I can probably just clean the headlight covers up a bit and/or replace them. I'll know more tomorrow (Friday) when I take it for a test drive to my mechanic.

Oh almost forgot to mention, the 103,000 miles appear to be mostly highway too (sweet!). The carfax indicated that the first guy who owned it, had it registered in Kentucky, and New Jersey, twice each over the course of 4 years. I assume this means that he travelled/lived back and forth between the two states... and the second guy who owned it only put about 30,000 miles on it.

EDIT: Apparently I spoke too soon. Right after I posted this message, I received an e-mail from Capitol One saying I was declined... which is bull**** because when I checked this morning it said it was approved...

Anyway, I don't know what's gonna happen now. I'm gonna see if I can get dealer financing for it... if not I'll just bite the bullet and settle for something I don't want. =(
