Having starting and idling problems

For some reason my car just doesn't like to start in the cold. Its a '98 SH model with 114k miles on it. Has modified cool air intake, headers, and exhaust. I purchased it from a private owner so I recently changed all the fluids and plugs.

The car was starting fine at first it was around 40 at the time and I never had an issue. A few weeks passed and it got colder outside. (I live in Chicago) Now whenever the temp drops under around 15 the car just won't start. She cranks just fine so I know its not the battery and if I play with it for a little while (5-10min) She'll eventually turnover and start, but I'm concerned about the wear and tear on my starter.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

I've been told it could be my Cold air sensor or maybe my fuel pump but I'm honestly clueless.

Oh and when she does start my idle tends to jump a lot. From around 1-2rpm and on bad days from 1-3. =\ Could it be my air filter or something?

Sorry for the long question

Re: Having starting and idling problems

For your idle problem:

the FINAL idle problem thread!!!!!

Sounds to me like the FITV is bad or you have a cracked/unplugged vaccum line. Check ALL the lines before you do anything else.

The FINAL "problem starting engine" thread!!!!!

See what a little searching does? it answers all of your problems :) once you go through all these things and it still doesnt work (i doubt that will happen) then start talking to us again.

For all intensive purposes, that link saves lives. Now, you must complete EVERY step before you come back saying it didn't work, lol. We get that A LOT!

Good luck man

my 98sh was the same way. i bought some stuff called HEET in a red bottle and it was good to go after a bottle of that... also try an oil pan warmer that worked for me as well. they are like 75$ on amazon

Re: Having starting and idling problems

Yup, it is very common, because that is what it sounds like, and therefore is often misused, misspelled and whatnot.

If you really want to learn something new, research the difference between "irony" and "coincidence." You'll prolly find out you've been using the word "irony" wrong the whole time.

As a matter of fact, Cracked.com has a whole article on often misused words and phrases, which is quite the interesting read. I would find the link for you, but my school has no sense of humor, and has therefore blocked the site. It is safe for work, if you want to find it yourself however.

Re: Having starting and idling problems

Haha well I think I will find that, I figured out that there was a difference in "agree" and "concur" the other day, when you say I concur it means that you agree but for a different reason, so I had been using that word wrong for a long time

But no time to look up other words I use wrong right now I need to pull my motor so I can get it to a shop to get it honed thanks to you I won't destroy my motor by trying to do it myself (sorry for thread jacking). I figure I may have already solved your problem anyway, and there shouldn't be a thread so I may as well jack it!
