so i just picked up another 5th gen for uber cheap carbon fiber hood and lid full after market suspention and recaros racing clutch ... ok enough gloating. how do you tell if its a SH motor information is very limited on this car no markings saying SH anywhere is there a letter on the vin? if it helps the valve cover is red .

Re: how do you find the differance between sh and base motor

SH has nothing to do with the motor. SH = super/superior handling (something like that). There should be a SH bulb that lights up on the dash when you turn the key onto accessories. Ur Prelude is not faster than a base, just handles better.

After some extensive research ,the only difference I have found between the base and the SH motor involves the cam that has more lift on the intake and exhaust and valve springs as shown in the documentation shown below from the OEM ,1999 Honda Tech manual.

The SH has the ATTS unit on it and the oil filter is also in a different spot. They both put out the same power.

Re: how do you find the differance between sh and base motor

spotting an SH - Honda Prelude Forum

As stated above the engine differences are negligible. IIRC the vin should be JHMBB615. If it reads JHMBB614 then its a base. Theres also other ways to tell, check the 5th gen resource for the specific thread.

The most reliable way to tell is the VIN.

If its an SH, then you wont have that ATTS anymore.
Why would he buy an SH for boosting?

Re: how do you find the differance between sh and base motor

Yeah with an SH you do a N/A build to about 230-250hp at the crank or so, no more hp or the ATTS is gone. Then you Do weight reduction and handling for the rest of your mods!
