Help, preludes shuts down.

Hey, I'm new to the forum but not to the prelude.

Recently I have had the problem of when I'm driving around my 99 prelude just cuts off. The only thing I have done recently is put some sea foam in when I was filling up, but I doubt this has anything to do with it. I was thinking it is a faulty ground but have not a clue where to start. The car is like said a 1999 non sh with just under 60k. Any advice would help.thank you very much.

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

possibly bad ignition switch...Do you have a lot of keys on your key chain? If so, that can cause your ignition switch to go bad

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

Did you put seafoam in the oil then not change the oil right after? Because that is bad voo-doo I don't remember exactly what it does but it could make your car shut down. But there is a recall on our ignition and this is a very common thing with our cars :P

how much seafoam did you use? I hope you didn't pour the whole can into your motor

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

No seafoam in oil just gas and used about half a can on 3/4 tank of gas. I don't have too many keys on my keychain. I will give Honda a call about the switch but in the 2 years I've had it, it hasn't had a problem. Thank you much I'll keep all the advice in mind

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

Does the car turn on and then cut off as soon as you let go of the key, or it cuts off and you can turn it back on and run it? If so it's probably a bad switch.

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

It starts on a dime every time but I'll be driving usually anywhere from 30 to 50mph and it will cut off. I'm begining to think it is the switch.

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

same thing happend to my 98 lude about 3 weeks ago. Its covered under warrenty with honda due to it being a recall just bring it to them and let them know whats going on and tell them to change out the two recalls in the ignition. It fixed my problem, but dont wait to long because it will get worse. I put it off and off until it shut down on me about 6 times in a 3miles drive home. Its free if you do it threw honda as well, good luck

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

watch your dash when the car shuts off next time, if its flashing the green key then its most likely what im talking about. your car should have two recalls on it, google and look them up i believe one is the switch, I left the paper work in my lude as its at honda shop again due to ignition cylinder sticking

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

yeah i had a 99 accord that did the same thing, changed the ignition switch out and it was fine, took about 20-30 min, just be careful with the airbag harnesses. by the way not all hondas were recalled, only certain ones in a certain area, mainly ones that were sold up north i think, my accord wasn't one that qualified for the recall when my switch went out, they'll be able to tell you if yours is eligible for a recall once you give them your VIN. If its not under the recall, its not a hard job to do by yourself, def save some money

Re: Help, preludes shuts down.

So took my prelude to the dealership they got about half way done and noticed they don't have the right parts. Another week. This is why I dislike hawaii no parts. But hey its free regardless
