Key wont turn in ignition

So I just got done bringing my 1998 prelude to the honda dealership to get two recalls fixed on the ignition. The car was shuting off while I was driving and gradually got worse. Well they fixed that problem but after about 4 days the ignition is now locked up. It turned fine for about 6-7 cranks but one day it just locked up for no reason. This left me stranded at cvs for an hour trying to jiggle it to make it crank and finally it did. now its in the driveway parked until i know what to do.

Should I get a new ignition lock cylinder? would this fix the problem. Honda said bring it back to them and they will see whats up with no charge. I just dont want to bring it and then it wont crank back up and they try to get money out of me

Im having problems trying to find this part online, seems they cut off at around 1996 and im not sure if their is a difference in the ignition from 96 to 98. thanks for any help

Re: Key wont turn in ignition

I'd definitely bring it to the dealership. You got it serviced there. Why would they make you pay again. It's a recall issue...

Re: Key wont turn in ignition

so the key locking up and not turning is one of the recalls? I have the paper work in my car of what they did to it but I thought it was more electrical. I wouldnt think the electrical issues i had would involve the key not turning since thats the tumblers or whatever....im not a car wizz

Re: Key wont turn in ignition

My ignition does that but only if I try and push the key in while I turn it. If i slide it all the way in and then turn it without putting pressure on it it's perfectly fine. been that way since I got her. I just think of it as an extra anti-theft measure(:

Re: Key wont turn in ignition

I have a brand new ignition cylinder from honda. If you end up looking for one, lemme know and I'll sell it. Mine is a 98 also. But they are pretty damn expensive from the dealer.

Edit: Pm me if your interested

Re: Key wont turn in ignition

It really is foolish not to take it back to the dealer. If it worked before just fine and doesn't now, there is a good chance they may have goofed something up. It happens, no ones perfect. Bring it back and let them look at it. No reason to get ruffled about it when they actively want to help.

Indeed. While it may not be part of the original recall, they were OBVIOUSLY working on the ignition, and NOW its sticking. Pretty easy to connect those dots. If they are a good dealership they will fix it.

Re: Key wont turn in ignition

Iv'e tried every trick in the book when it comes to turning the key so that is out of the solution for the problem. Only think I noticed different with the ignition when trying to turn the key is when I took it out it had a good bit of black grease on it which is the only reason im thinking they may have fooled with the ignition cylinder. the recalls that was done on it was more electrical and not the actual ignition cylinder.

my main consern is if if bring it to the shop and it is in fact just a problem on my own and I cant get the car to crank back up. I dont want them to put the ignition cylinder in because of the cost for parts and labor. I can install it myself if needed. I guess ill just take a role of the dice and go to them and see what happens. I've had such a bad week I hope this goes in my favor

Re: Key wont turn in ignition

Since Honda touched the car last, I'd take it back to them and tell them to fix the problem. If they try and charge you, tell them to f**k off cause it's their fault for it messing up since you didn't have this problem before taking it to them...Also, do you have a lot of stuff on your key chain? If so, that sometimes causes problems with the igniton cylinder cause all the weight on your key chain messes up the stuff inside

I would just take it back to the dealer. It would not hurt to call and tell them about the problem and see what they would say about doing it for free.
