New Prelude, some problems

Hey all,

I'm new to this site and to preludes. Just bought a 1998 prelude a month ago. Really like it, its awesome to drive. First Japanese car, other cars have been 2 Mercedes' and a BMW. The prelude is the most fun to drive.

Anyway, I'm having a couple of problems and I was hoping someone could shed some light.

1. Brake Light on dash: SOMETIMES the brake light comes on in the dash. Usually, it will happen when I first start driving or when I use the brake. Now, in the German cars, if the brake light comes on when you're braking, it means you need brake pads. But, the light that comes on in the prelude is the E-brake light, is this the same light, that tells you to replace brake pads? Also, the brakes do squeal a little bit sometimes when I brake. The car came from a dealer, so I just assumed they put cheapies (pads) on the car and its taking a while for them to break in. BUT, other times, the light will just come on, and ONE time, I saw the ABS light, just for a second.

2. Check Engine Light: I have noticed the car doesnt feel as peppy as when I first got it. At first I thought it was because I was getting used to it. But, when I was accelerating hard the other day, it drowned out at about 6000rpm. It felt like I just let off the gas really hard, it through me forward. It was like it just lost all power, so I quickly shifted. Later on, it hesitated when I put the pedal down a little in 5th gear. I was just cruising in 5th gear, 3000rpm or so, and I put the pedal down a little more and it jerked a little, kinda like it coughed or something, then started to go a little faster. Even later on, I stopped for gas, and when I got back in the car, the check engine light was on. I made sure it wasnt the gas cap. Took the car to advance for an OBDII reading and it read the following:

1. system too lean
2. catalyst efficiency below threshold
3. fuel trim malfunction

I'm thinking change the fuel filter, but what do you guys think?

Sounds to me like you have more than one problem. Good thing you had it diagnosed. If it bogs down at 6000 rpm, that can't be good. I would say get a real diagnosis from a Honda dealer and go from there. It might be worth the $65 they charge to tell you what to fix. Unless you try to fix everything yerself!

brake light: check brake fluid. theres a little float switch in the resovoir, your either low or its stuck.
as for the bogging. sounds like a fuel problem. kinda hard to diagnose without driving it ya know. good luck though. gotta prelude helms? it's the prelude bible. has anything and everything in it. "honda shop repair manual" the one they use to work on it. i've got 2 lemme know if you need one i've got it for sale for 50 bucks.

i took care of it, there's no need to ban him for a simple mistake.

but TNation this is a warning: since that post was irrelevant to the original thread, i deleted it and that is considered thread-jacking, which isn't tolerated. i saw you created a new thread with the same question, so that will stay.

no name-calling either, as juvenile as that sounds. that applies for both of you.

Did I do something wrong? If I did, I sure would like to know what it is.

Thanks to all the replies, I am taking it to Honda to get it properly diagnosed.
As for the brake light, I'll probably end up fixing that myself. Havent really had time to look at more closely lately, but its gotta be something simple.

first problem just sems like the switch for ur ebrake gets stuck or is shorted not a biggy hondas dont have a light for low brake pads, second problem should be the one to worry about sounds like a fuel and emissions proble, cat could be broken and for ur fuel problem, sounds like ur engine aint gettin enough fuel so check everything even the pump and fuel relays a lot of times that can be a problem. One last thing check your primary 02 sensor before the cat, that could lead to insufficient fuel management like running too lean or rich and could cause hesitation too. u should get an air fuel ration gauge too when u get those problems fixed to help monitor it.
