exhaust choices..

ordered a tri-y header in group buy with 2.5 inch collector a few days ago... concerned about what should be on the other end of it. i'm selling a megan header/ebay piping and muffler exhaust that i never got to install, so i can find something nice for this header.

any suggestions on what has legitimate power gains while avoiding sounding like a rice can? i'm on a bit of a budget so preferably pipes/test pipe/muffler for under 400 or 500 if possible

Re: exhaust choices..

well i'm trying to sell the whole exhaust as a package so it'll actually move.
i'll keep it in mind though if it doesn't go; any ideas on 2.5" in mufflers that sound good/give gains?

Re: exhaust choices..

U wont get any gains with just a muffler. If your looking for more power, go for a 3" exhaust. If your just wanting a nice sound, go with the 2.5" exhaust and get a ws2 muffler. Or whatever other muffler u may like

Re: exhaust choices..

the piping will be 2.5" since it's NA...12:1 pistons waiting to go in etc.
needing to know what options i have -- thank you for the ws2 suggestion; will try and find some clips of the sound

Re: exhaust choices..

3" will make more power than the 2.5" exhaust. Even if its na. 3" isnt too big for a na build. Theres plenty of threads about it on the internet and even dyno charts proving it.

Im gonna be doing a sorta all motor build, but with a shot of nitrous too.

My plans for my exhaust is 3" kteller mandrel bent piping, vibrant resonator, and a vibrant 3" muffler. I promise u that 3" isnt too big

Re: exhaust choices..

that may be so, but i'd rather not cut up the expensive 1 piece header/2.5" collector to fit 3 inches at the last Y. i appreciate the info -- somewhere down the road i may look into it, but for now it'll have to be 2.5

Re: exhaust choices..

well, i looked at some vids of the ws2 and it sounds awesome. sounds stock at low rpm but really opens up when you get on it.

anyone know where to get a decent price on one? or just a reputable dealer

Re: exhaust choices..

Apexi WS2 seems to be very popular
Heard good things about the Tanabe line, specifically the Gold Medallion.

And there's 123,456 other exhaust brands out there. Google bro.

Re: exhaust choices..

yeah someone told me about google once a while ago, but i was kind of hoping for experience and knowledgeable reviews from owners, not people paid by companies to write positive feedback for them.

i appreciate the names, but i like the ws2 quite a lot. just need to find a legitimate seller

Ebay CF exhaust 3" in, 4.5" out, 3" piping sounded sexy on my old car

Yes. It is well-known that 3" has gains over 2.5" even on stock preludes. Don't get caught up in "backpressure" B.S.

blackbb6 your setup will be very nice I got the vibrant muffler and am very happy with it. I have a write-up on my exhaust on this site under product reviews with sound clips if OP cares to hear them.

I don't think cutting is necessary. Get an adapter and weld that to a flange so you can bolt it to the tri-y 2.5" collector flange, right?
2.5 inch x 3 inch T304 Stainless Steel Straight (Concentric) Reducer - Vibrant Performance 2630 <- like this

Your tri-y header should include an extra flange for stuff like this, if you got it from kronn or sub.

I frikkin love your sarcasm. Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic. "yeah someone told me about google once..." LAWL

You are right to want advice from other experiences but there are very little gains to be had with exhaust so it really is all about what sound you want more than anything. So the only input people can really give you is their opinion and many people would rather tell you to make your own than give you advice about what they like because everyone is different and it might be wasted effort.

Find the part# muffler you want and google that up and find it for cheap. THMotorsports had the cat I wanted. Got the muffler from somewhere else, got the flexpipe from ebay, etc etc.

pulling a noob on this but, where do you find 3" piping bent for a lude? i found one but it doesn't look like it has a test pipe.
essentially i'd have to buy the 3" piping and the 2.5"to3.0" connection for collector to pipe connection and get a 3" inlet muffler?

Re: exhaust choices..

The stock exhaust on the 5th gen Prelude that received another dose of Honda engineering improvement from the 4th gen exhaust has been refined to the point that you will not achieve any real world usable gains from your exhaust mods unless you have made other significant mods that dictate a need to upgrade your stock exhaust in my opinion.

5th gen improvements over the 4th gen exhaust:

The exhaust manifold, while retaining its outer diameter, had its opening size increased. The dual-pipe design to follow was made truly cylindrical, (as opposed to oval) and the wall lining was made to 15mm -- decreasing exhaust interference. The catalytic converter was also increased in size, and the exhaust piping increased from 50.8mm to 57mm. The silencer efficiency was increased from 97 liters/second to 113 liters/second.

Re: exhaust choices..

Go to kteller.com. They have 3" exhaust piping already bent to the oem route of your prelude exhaust. And yes, get a muffler with a 3" inlet and whatever size outlet u want.

hate to keep asking so many noob questions, but i checked out the piping and it seems there's no bulge for a test pipe, it's just straight through. is that an issue at all?

also, will a universal turbo 80mm ws2 muffler cut it with that 3" piping and reducer? if so i'll order this stuff today :P
