CEL code HELP!

sooo i had my check engine light on since i bought the lude about 7 months ago. nvr really looked into it but i live in Cali and its time for a trip to the TEST ONLY smog station.. im sure it wont pass w/ CEL on.. i ran the codes at a buddy's shop and i pulled P0302 (cyl. #2 misfire) and P1399 (manf. control ignition system or misfire) obviously this sets off my ATTS light since the unit shuts itself off whenever theres a CEL on. damn, hella annoying.. worse case scenario i was told i might have to remove the head if its a bad exhaust valve..they wanna do a cylinder leak-down test first. idk what it could be. plz help out here. unfortunately the matter is time sensitive cuz im due for reg. renewal in a few days, so i need it fixed asap. thanks!

Re: CEL code HELP!

problem got a bit worse.. throwin up misfire in cyl. 1 and 4 as well now.. im gettin a p0420 too (upstream O2 sensor).. did a cyl. leak down test and compression test. pulled 210 in all cyl. except #2, which came out to 160psi.. added a bit of oil to #2 and compression went up from 160 to approx. 185psi. my guess is bad piston rings? suggestions would be helpful. thanks.

Re: CEL code HELP!

P0302
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

A code P0302 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

Faulty spark plug or wire
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Running out of fuel
Poor compression
Defective computer

P1399

On most Honda's when you get a misfire happening across the whole engine like that there are a few likely issues. the ignition coil if it's a single coil style or the connector at the distributor. They alsp have some issues with egr's and plugged ports which can mess with the fuel trim numbers. It's important to check the fuel pressure and if possible a timing offset spec from the scanner whenever you're dealing with misfires on any vehicles Honda or not and determine correct pressure and flow whenever possible. Was your reading of +20 on the fuel trims taken at idle? How does the 02 sensor appear to be switching. After it smoothed out what did the fuel trim number do?

Turned out to be the spark plugs. Thanks for the tips. I checked everything before checking the plugs. Next time I'll start with the easiest and cheapest, whether or not I think it is likely.
I assumed that since all cylinders were throwing misfire codes that it couldn't be the plugs. Apparently, though, that kind of thing happens fairly regularly. A friend explained that if all of the plugs are pretty close to the end of their life, one can go, creating higher load on the others, which in turn makes them misfire as well. I don't know that I buy that entirely, but changing the plugs fixed it. Live and learn.
Thanks again for everyone's suggestions and tips. I learned a lot about my engine during this exercise.

Best I could get.

Re: CEL code HELP!

^^^ thnx bud.. i checked pretty much all the items u listed.. i did a compression test and the results are in my other post above. im guessing the cat and O2 sensors are bad cuz of the P0420 code. as for the misfire is caused by the faulty piston rings im pretty sure.. i pretty much got it narrowed down to that.. there's nothin else really that can cause it except the bad rings in cyl #2. hence the compression #'s in that cyl.
