Re: best ecu for h22

not sure on the p72, but im running a chipped and tuned p28 in mine. never had a problem.

i think the one advantage to the p72 is the IAB control. (secondary runners in the intake mani)

I am having the same questions with tuning my car. I guess it all depends on what state you live in.

check this out >>> possible issues with passing inspection???

the p28 is a 92-95 civic ex ecu(obd1), and the p72 is a 96 and up GSR ECU I think and it is obd2.

you can tune both of them.

Re: best ecu for h22

I seem to hear the same solutions to your questions, maybe this will help:

Q) I don't have emissions and I want to tune my lude, what ecu do I get?
A) Contact the people at Phearable.net - Electronic Fuel Injection Tuning Solutions - Hondata, Neptune, Crome, Uberdata, Ectune, AEM, Honda Tuning, Widebands, Fuel Pumps, Intercoolers, Turbos, LS/VTEC, ECU Chipping, Chipped Ecus, P28 and let them assist you in purchasing a customized ECU for your car. I'm not trying to look like a salesman for them, but they are well-known throughout the honda community for what they do.

Q) I have emissions to pass and I want to tune my lude, how?
A) You will have to pass ODB2 standards. OBD2 ECU memory resets so any tuning done is lost, you have to use something like a piggy back to tune. You could get something cheap and practically worthless like VAFC, or you can spend some serious change $1k+ on AEM or Greddy Emanage OBD2 and get some kick-ass tuning done.

I guess I could use a VAFC but not too familular with those...

I would like to know if someone has had success with using a VAFC with an obd2 5th gen that has been built or either turbo'd

nooooooooo. dont do it. i know its rare to even see someone with cams try and tune with a VAFC.. let alone a full build or even turbo'd. because in the end your still relying on your stock ecu, which doesnt do well with boost, unless tuned for it(which cant be done with our stock obd2 ecus)

Well, if you saw what I quoted from you it should have been obvious but I guess not all can comprehend well so let me fix it.

p72 - secondary butterfly support and knock sensor. Except it is the wrong knock board for the h22.

p28 - No secondary, no knock sensor support

apologies.......kthxbye

I've seen this device that lets you install a chip over the main in your current ECU. The product cost was about 1k and you had to buy new chips to program. If someone is interested in the system I'll dig around for their website.

... we know this.. its call a chipped ecu. but to do that you have to have a obd1 p28 or p72 (preferably those anyway). but for anyone needing to meet obd2 emission's that wont work. because you wont pass emissions anymore.

either if you do get a chipped ecu. buy it from a tuner preferably, and have him put at minimum a base map on it. but if possible have it dyno tuned. costs a lil more but trust me, WELL worth the money. just make sure to goto someone with a half decent rep behind them.

oh and to clear one more thing up in there. this whole bit doesnt cost 1k.. well it could i guess. like for me, i spent 150 on a chipped p28 with a basemap on it, and 75 for a harness to make it plug right it. then a couple weeks later i spent another 350 and had a full dyno tune done. tuning costs all depend on what you have done and how long it takes to tune your car.

Phearable will set the Vtec engagment on your ECU to whatever you want. Otherwise you could get an adjustable controller, they aren't very expensive from what I remember. But Vtec engagement is not something you will play around with much. If you are doing enough mods to change that you'll need a new tune anyway, so the short answer is it is a waste of money imo.

I doubt he is talking about VAFC since he keeps using the term "chip." Probably the latter with one of those removable chip sockets so you can have one for the track and one for DD or whatever.

as far as that, thats only if you dont need to pass emssions. because thats converting(if you car isnt already) to OBD1. none the less, after buying a ecu from them, you still need to go have the car tuned by a tuner. no chip/map you;ll get from online will ever be a "tune" they are all just base maps, or someones best guess for what would be good or close to right for your car.

and you cant chip a honda obd2 ecu, hense why your only options are piggy back systems like i was saying. like the Apexi VAFC or Greddy Emanage..
