Engine swap in the near future.

So i am considering doing an engine swap in my 97 prelude. Right now its just got the stock H22 and its def time for it to go(burning tons of oil and getting up there in miles) its got 140k which isnt bad for a honda, but def time for some more power.

I am considering possibly a B16 or a K20 to swap into it. The motor would be broken down and rebuilt strong, but i'm just looking for some suggestions to which motor i should swap in.

If you guys got any suggestions let me know, thanks guys

Re: Engine swap in the near future.

My suggestion, if your going to break it down and rebuild it anyways, keep the h22 and build it, it will save you from buying a new motor and will save you lots of other headaches.

What I am doing is replacing my rings (why your burning more oil) and bearings keeping stock pistons and just cleaning them, building the head with skunk2 forged valves, tuner series valve springs, and titanium retainers, and changing my timing belt. And will all the random gaskets and everything that is costing around $1,700 then later I'm going to put in tuner series stage 3 cams. I think its worth it.

Re: Engine swap in the near future.

If you are going to do a swap just get another H22 engine. I never seen a B16 or K20 swap done on a 5th Gen Prelude. A B16 is good for a civic or hatchback which are more lighter cars to push. Imagine putting a B16 in a Prelude which weighs a ton, you would never make it up an hill LOL....

Re: Engine swap in the near future.

what a noob... b16's are useless ina prelude like get real. all preludes burn oil so get used to it. keep the h22 and build it for what you want to do(NA or boost)

Why dont you jus find a guy that owns a civic with a B16 and swap motors and when all is said and done....see who wins!!!

Seriously...ur better off keeping the motor and upgrade the block itself!!!
Or do what I did...buy a H22a motor and then part out the H22a4 and sell the parts to get your $$$ back?!?!

Re: Engine swap in the near future.

While I think the K20 will be faster than your H22 (You'll save well over 100lbs with it making up for the lack of torque), go Accord K24 block with the Civic Si/RSX Type-S head and then get some after market rods and pistons. You'll be much faster, weigh less (improving handling), burn less oil and save 20%+ on gas. 6 gears for the win.

Re: Engine swap in the near future.

^^^ Someone needs to retake third grade spelling class.

And any K swap, from what I've heard, is rather complex and expensive. It'd be much easier just to swap in a H22/23 flavor.

Re: Engine swap in the near future.

if you want more TQ go with a H23A blue top
don't waste your time on a b16 its never been done for a reason
or keep your H22 and rebuild it

those are pretty much your best options

seriously though the b16 thing was kind of noobish and hilarious

Re: Engine swap in the near future.

Wow, uncalled for rage anybody?

As stated the B16 has never been done with good reason. Even when heavily built it lacks sufficient torque to get the Prelude's heavy arse off the mark.

K20/24 is a great engine to swap in. It's been done before, and you can buy many of the parts you'll need off the shelf. (However finding this shelf may be kinda hard) The K when built can produce astronomical power outputs and high levels of torque, and will be as reliable as the tax department trying to screw you.

However the biggest drawback of the K (which to be brutally honest is the best engine you can transplant) is the cost of the conversion itself. For the cost of only the conversion, you could have a lightly built turbocharged H22; and for what you'll spend on building the K then dropping it in you could have an absolutely off it's nut turbocharged H22 or H23.
