OBX Stage 2 Camshafts

I had these cams sitting in my closet for the past year. I need to know if these cams are safe to use for my H22. Heard some good things but most of the bad are from people who never use them before and just want to put down OBX products. I had plenty of OBX products and never had a problem with them at all.. If any of you guys know anything about these cams please let me know..

Re: OBX Stage 2 Camshafts

Thing is those cams are a direct replica of a cam made by a brand name. Once the copyrights are over they can be copied, now it's whether or not the OBX people use the same material or they try and use a cheaper material is the real concern.

Thats why the brand name stuff is so exspensive, first they have to cover their engineering exspenses and they don't skimp out on material selection.

Metals are hardened several different ways
strain hardening (cold worked)
precipitation hardening

all ways of hardening the metals cause them to be stronger but the inverse affect is they become more brittle. Has to be just right and that testing costs money, so if OBX picks up the plans and duplicates the design characteristics but not the use of materials who knows what you got.

Just a tip

Re: OBX Stage 2 Camshafts

^^smart dude

shop i worked on about a yr ago had a B series with them in on the 4th pass one snapped
could have been an oiling issue or a quality issue but i will never use them.
honestly if your going to cam your engine and this is comming from personnel experience
crower or skunk2 is the way to go. sell the OBX's to some ricer on craigslist and get you a real set of cams and gears

fast cheap reliable you can only have two

Re: OBX Stage 2 Camshafts

Yeah I am learning something. I'm currently going to school for two degrees Electronics and Mechanical Engineering.

I've been picking up some things in my Materials/ processes of Industry class.
I had no idea chemistry and physics could be so fun.

I'd say some of the OBX stuff is fine like non stressed parts like maybe valve covers are okay.

But yeah there is no such thing as cheap, fast & reliable.

cheap has no place in performance of automobiles.

Re: OBX Stage 2 Camshafts

Well I have some OBX headers and they work fine on the prelude but i guess the risk of putting there cams in can be a big difference. I wish i would have read up on them a little more before I spent my hard earn money on them..lol

Re: OBX Stage 2 Camshafts

True as I have a eBay header and have not had any issues exept for the part where the downpipe connects to the motor (that small bracket) they made the flange way too thin for the selection of stainless they went with (it's cracked twice). See they skimp on materials to cut costs.

But the mandrel bends are welded up nicely even welded the inside where the pipe meets the flange to bolt up to the head.

Yeah a header won't see the kind of stress a cam shaft will see, so like I said some of their stuff is fine, I guess its safe to say just don't trust their internal parts of the motor.
