Re: Black smoke all over my rear

Clean EGR valve and replace gaskets and plugs for it. The carbon is building up in there.

Okay yes, yes and yes

It is very typical of our Ludes to burn a little oil. My car gets all caked with oil on the back too, but I do wash mine from time to time :)

Test your rings
You can perform a compression test to see where you stand on all cylinders as long as they are all within 10% your doing good. Now I would estimate a lude with probably around 150,000 you should read in the area of 200 to 210 lbs in each cylinder. Now if you have a cylinder lower than 10% of the others chances are that yes that cylinder is experiencing some blow by the rings. However you can also loss some through the valve guide seals.

The FRM (fiber reinforced metal) coating your talking about generally is a tougher coating than cylinder walls without FRM but the factory honda rings are designed to go in that cylinder and last a very very very long time. That is why when replacing rings you want to use factory honda rings otherwise you'll be in there replacing another set of rings before its time.

Hope that helps.
