Icon7 Finally Time to Let Go of My Prelude

Well folks...what can i say? There's been downs but mostly ups with it and it's been a wonderful 3 years with the red 1997 Honda Prelude SH.

I was driving on my commute home from work yesterday at 3 in the morning, and the oil light comes on. I pull up to the nearest gas station and check the oil dip stick...completely dry. To my horror, i look behind the vehicle and see a dreadful trail of oil leading up to a sizable puddle of oil underneath the engine. There's a lot more to the story, but to make things concise, from the looks of things, the timing cover blew out and the engine had seized. The pistons probably have melted onto the engine, and the gaskets are fried. I got home by way of the tow-truck. Needless to say, the car isn't drivable anymore.

Any ideas on what to do with it? Can i still sell it for its chassis? Part it out? Parting out is probably too complicated and i won't have time for it. Should i just sell it to the junkyard or maybe just donate it for a tax deductible credit? Is it even worth anything anymore?

I'm on the market now looking for a new car, because i'm going to need one for work and i can't keep borrowing cars. The brand-new cars that i'm looking at (to lease or finance) include the Subaru Impreza, Suzuki Kizashi, and even yes, the Kia Forte...all manual transmission of course. So i'm kind of excited to decide on what my next car will be. But it's been a wonderful 3 years here.

Thats a real bummer man, sorry to hear it.

If you end up parting it/junking it, wanna sell me the front left corner marker housing? Its something little and stupid, but I need it.

Re: Finally Time to Let Go of My Prelude

In all honesty, your engine should be fine. Get the block inspected, in fact manually crank the block by hand or get a new cover and fill it up and try starting the car. If the motor is bad, get another block. Its cheaper than a lease. You have to pay for full coverage, and every little nick the car gets when you return it.

If you live in a cheap insurance state, go Subaru.

Re: Finally Time to Let Go of My Prelude

I actually went to a Kia dealership today and wow, the Forte is really a lot of value for the money, and i have to admit, i really like the looks. I also went to a Subie dealership and i'm liking the Impreza2.5i (no STI, i don't really want to afford it) in dark gray metallic. Hopefully they will both have manual transmission next time i go because i want to test drive them.

I wish i could help you there, but i've obviously got a lot of things going on. I have to find a car soon because i need something for my commute to work and i can't keep borrowing cars.

I actually haven't tried to start it up because during the tow, the batteries dimmed out and went out.

Actually someone mentioned just spending $700 and dropping a new motor in it. This is actually the same guy who says he's thinking of offering me a grand for the shell today. Since i've got a lot of things going on, we'll take things step by step and one by one.

I honestly don't know yet. A friend of mine said he may offer a grand for the shell and then drop a motor in, but that's tentative since he's also busy. If you're still interested, i have to let you know that it does have a couple of scratches on the rear right quarter panel. I've got a lot of things going on so i have to take things step by step starting with getting a car so i can commute to work.

Re: Finally Time to Let Go of My Prelude

huh? we dont just end threads like that around here...

the shell would be an excellent start for someone with a motor. its almost too bad you couldnt keep it yourself for a project. the rest of the car cannot be too beat, no reason not to just rebuild. (edit) you wont need a battery to crank it over, just turn the wheel.

but if you do leave us, please dont buy a Kia

speaking from experience.... you WILL make a LOTTTT more money parting the entire car out, but it will also take ALOTTTTT longer to do that, which it sounds like you don't have time to do. so i would try to sell the shell to someone deserving of it

I'm gonna say 2k o.b.o. bc i think (not sure if i'm correct) that's how much i could get deducted off my taxes if i donate it and have the proceeds go to a charitable organization.

Yeah bro you're totally correct. And yeah, was checkin' out the Forte and Subie 2.5i 4dr sedan, and both are really nice, but definitely hands down the AWD is a big factor.

I wouldn't think getting a kia is a very great idea, they have a cheap price because they are cheap cars...everything i heard about them has been bad, but if you do buy a new car make sure you do your research first.

Well, the quality on them has been getting better, plus most new cars these days should last a couple of years with no problems. But that's besides the point i already ended up buying a subaru!

Haha, i'm not making that type of money yet... I found a pretty good deal and went and bought a used subie leggy waggy, awd, stick-shift (of course)! I have to say it's already growing on me already since it performs so well in severe weather and it's got a lot of utility.

If anyone is interested in a red 1997 Honda Prelude Type SH shell, i'm still willing to sell btw.

Yeah bro, i'm def. sad to see the motor blow out, appreciate the sympathy. I'm definitely leaning more towards selling the shell or donating it (but if at all possible i'd like to sell it if it comes down to it), however, there's still the slight possibility of just keeping it and working on it as a project car but that's a very very slim chance.

Good times with the crew though, you guys and this club in general have shared plenty of fun memories to remember. Plus, it's one of the first car clubs i've joined that really felt like family: no one flames anyone, almost everyone is always friendly and helpful, the barbecues are great with you and the gang (but mostly you lol) grillin' the burgers...It's strange to say but it's true...i'm scopin' subie clubs now ( i own a Subaru now) and heck...even the forums aren't as organized as this one is...and it's just not the same as people over here yet.

yeah that thought crossed my mind, but i was looking at some jdm engines h22a4s, and they're still costing a couple of thou. not to mention the labor and other parts involved, and my expertise really isn't up to the level of being able to put it all together by myself to be able to offset the costs.

Plus, i already have a Subie. No sense in having and insuring 2 cars at this point.

Anyways, i've got some potential buyers that are still interested that are going to be coming to look at the shell. Maybe i can get something for it after all...
