New Cams?

Hey all. A friend of mine has taken the 2001 SH apart and he said the cams are shot. My question is what is a good choice for the money? Keep in mind this will be strictly a DD, so I really just want a good replacement for longevity mainly. I'm not really concerned with gains but if a replacement from the stock ones would do so I wouldn't be against it.

Re: New Cams?

From the look of the cams it was clear that they were ruined. OEM unless the valvetrain is replaced too? OEM it is then.

skunk2 tuner series stage one cams do NOT require you to upgrade your valvetrain, it's only recommended.

you could also upgrade to the Type S cams.

Re: New Cams?

There's a few folks over here in the UK that are running Skunk2 stage 1 cams with OEM internals and theire doing fine

Personally I'd uprate the springs and retainers anyways just for piece of mind but everyone to their own I suppose!

Would a Base head work on a stock H22 SH block?

Should. The SH and base engines are the same. Granted they have different bolt patterns for the transmission, but I'm pretty sure they are fundamentally the same. They are both H22a4's anyway.

And with after market cams it is highly suggested that you upgrade your airflow componets. ie. IM, TB, Intake.

Re: New Cams?

Sorry to ask such a stupid question. But the cam seals will need replacing with the camshafts. Are there any more top end seals or gaskets that I should replace while we are in there?

Re: New Cams?

Oh and I ordered a complete head off of ebay. Here is the one camshaft that was damaged in shipping. JE Performance was the vendor. I called them, long story short, they didn't wrap and package the sh*t correctly. I am not a mechanic nor do I claim to have their knowledge, but to me the b*tch looks unusable to me. Can anyone help me out? I want to replace the camshafts with OEM ones. I have searched high and low with nothing to show for it. Trying not to have to spend around $300 just for one off of Majestic.

Wow, it should not be too hard to get them to give back your money, tell them you are gonna ship it back for a refund.

Re: New Cams?

Yeah so much for that sh*t. UPS and JE performance have only given me the f*cking run around. Looks like I might have to just chalk this one up experience. At least the head was okay. Even though they f*cked up two sensors on the passenger's side of the head. Then again, that is not why I ordered the d*mn thing in the first place. Seals or gaskets related? I have ordered camshafts from my buddy leavemedroolin.

Re: New Cams?

From what I have read, cam design is such that it works in sync with the operation of the piston. Changing the cam may necessitate a change in the pistons stroke, compression, and peak rpm capabilities in order to yeild to be effective. You cannot re-engineer an engine one part at a time. Also in the past, fuel economy was something that most auto enthusiast did not really concern themselves with ,but with the rising price of gas, even hard core enthusiast are starting to feel the bite in they wallet. Right know where I live , it cost about $50 to fill my 15.9 gal tank with gas. God forbid if the cost of gas goes to $5/gal then a fill up could go to almost $80/tank leaving guys with heavily modded cars stuck in the drive way waxing their cars and ranting at passer by about its capabilities.I would guess for the best performance bang for the buck a stock cam would be best for you.

If you're planning on using that head or even the other one, I would take it to a machinist and have them check to make sure its straight and have it milled accordingly. Otherwise you won't get a good seal with the head gasket. There's really not any other "hidden" gaskets or seals that you might need.

Re: New Cams?

The head is in a very reputable machine shop that specializes strictly in doing only head work. Haha, head work. Anyway I just had to ask seeing there is a cam hole plug that is in very close proximity to the distributor and vtec solenoid.
