5th gen tranny issue

im not sure if its the clutch or the master cylinder..

my tranny does not shift into 1st, 3rd or 5th but to get it to go in 2nd 4th and Reverse i have to pump my clutch 4-5 times for the gear to go in.

now i was quoted $220 for a brand new OEM clutch and $350 for installation. not sure what i should do as im a student working part time job.

EDIT: when i try to put the car into 1st with the clutch all the way in the tranny grinds gears....

Re: 5th gen tranny issue

How is your fluid level? Is your pedal mushy or goes to the floor? Does it go into gear when the car is off?

Re: 5th gen tranny issue

I'm not saying that bleeding the slave is going to be the fix but it is an easy starting point. Check your brake fluid level first. Fill it up if it's low then have someone help you bleed the slave and see if that helps.

When was the last time your transmission fluid was changed?

You took the time to look at the thread and post a comment inwhich it isnt helpful. Yes we know it has been said and done, but some people dont have the EXACT issue as others and would like to have a current opinion to their issue. So reading old threads and searching to others or most dont help much.

I've had numerous times where i read and read so many threads relating to my issue and it got me nowhere but that when people posted comments to my thread that it made me look more into my issue and solved the problem then.

Overall unless ur a MOD then please be kind and help those in need and post something useful and helpful or jus dont post at all to boost up your post count!!!

So IMO I would go check your master cylinder jus to see if youre topped off as well as any leaks that may have caused you to not clutch properly.

If you're grinding in 1st then i think your tranny might be done for.

I dont remember the proper term for it but check that line leading from the clutch pedal to the slave on the tranny to see if the line is worn out. Jus some things maybe to start off with to look around!!!

G-luck bro!!!

Re: 5th gen tranny issue

You will prolly need to bleed your clutch, first and foremost. A new clutch may very well be called for. But if it does not go into 3 gears but will go into the other 3, you may be looking at busted cables or the shifting mechanism.

Re: 5th gen tranny issue

This happened with my jeep once and it was because i was offroading and broke my crossmember mounts that was holding up my tranny so it was almost falling out so i could only shift into 1st 3rd and 5th. Not saying that this is what happened to you but have you looked under your car? lol

its not likely that this happened seeing that this is a prelude but it couldve been low and hit something :P

Re: 5th gen tranny issue

I just ended up replacing the clutch in my 98 base model.

** after initially listening to other peoples opinions and taking it to a transmission shop. I replaced the transmission - the advise was the synchros were going bad.

** The second tranny was doing the same as the 1st!

Ended up finding broken motor mounts (front and rear) and the clutch was going bad.

Replaced clutch with comp stage 2 AND motor mounts.

Everything is gravy now!

Good luck

first off don't flame the guy for pointing the OP in the direction of stickied threads, because this what we'd like everyone to do. Flooding the forums with clutch, idle, rim, and body kit questions is what we're trying to avoid. Nobody is closing this thread, so the OP can look at the stickied thread and try some things on his own. If he then has questions, he can post them in this thread and we'll attempt to help him.

In summation, do NOT try to reprimand our members for doing exactly what's expected of them, neither of you are mods yourselves.
You flame a guy for "trying to be a mod" and I think that is b.s. He's just doing what we expect all of you to do.

thank you ludezilla for linking the OP to the appropriate thread.
