Icon5 Opinions Please! Repair Costs?

I just recently bought a 98 Prelude (Base) and I am getting it repaired at a local shop (Not Honda Dealership). Please give me opinions on the following: Front O2 Sensor is being replaced for $170.00, is this a fair price? Catalytic Converter is $260.00 to replace but isn't necessary for the time being they say. What should I do, replace or wait and is it a fair price? They said wait until I notice a drop in power and back pressure. Diagnostic code is showing my EGR valve is messed up but they don't see how. It may need cleaning. This would be $300.00. They said wait until I notice surging... should I and is it a good price? They are replacing Valve Cover Gasket in an attempt to stop numerous oil leaks. Also adding dye to try and determine where leaks are coming from. This is for $116.00. Fair? Replacing broken front engine mount for $151.00 Fair? Replacing head light bulbs for a small amount I assume... never found out should I do this myself? I'm not smart when it comes to doing this type of stuff wondering if it is easy. A piston is misfiring in engine. What usually causes this? They do not know in this particular vehicle. Should I fix it ASAP? The washer pump is broken (windshield fluid motor) haven't got estimate on this yet what should it be? Thanks in advance!

Re: Opinions Please! Repair Costs?

O2 sensors are only around $40 for NGK/NTK (I got mine from Amazon).
Magnaflow Highflow catalytic converter is $90 give or take and I paid $30 for labor since my shop provided the gaskets (got mine off eBay).
EGR valve... well that's the price of getting one replaced, and the gaskets are usually $10 bucks. Getting it cleaned should be a lot less, or you could do it yourself. There's a DIY.
Light bulbs you can do yourself. Under the hood there's rubber caps. Pull those off and you have access to the headlights. Get Nokya's unless your running HID's. I've found them to be great.
Washer pump you could most likely find from a junkyard for cheap.
Misfiring could be a lot of things. First, I'd get that EGR cleaned. Then I'd replace your spark plugs replaced (with NGK's), spark plug wires (with NGK's as well), distributor cap (OEM), and rotor(OEM). If all that fails, run seafoam through your car. Could be random carbon build up.

To be honest, your car sounds exactly like mine (deja vu:P). Bought my car in October and replaced both my O2's, my Cat, replaced my plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and now my car is throwing a CEL about the EGR so i'll have to clean or replace that.

Re: Opinions Please! Repair Costs?

Is there some other shops in your area that you could go to and get quote's on the same items? I would try and find a shop that works on mainly Honda's. Then I would let them know after they give you a quote what the other guys quoted, that usually will help them to bring the price down a wee bit. Good luck!

Re: Opinions Please! Repair Costs?

the price seems ok but i would have done it myself. plus you probably could have found these parts for cheaper.

but i guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

how does the car run now?

Yeah, but I'm not automotive savvy at all, so better safe then sorry. CEL still comes on because of EGR valve that we assume needs cleaning, and Catalytic Converter not being very efficient. It never ran bad in the first place but the thought of driving around such an awesome car messed up didn't sit well with me. Plus it would have needed this done later down the road. Getting it out of the way.

Haha to late now. But seriously do you think that is the only over-priced thing?

Doesn't look like you paid for what you said in your original post. I can't read your receipt to clearly though.

Re: Opinions Please! Repair Costs?

Have you asked this car repair question to your local dealers? I think the o2 sensor seems excessive because it's a heated oxygen sensor. OE it's about 180 for the part so you figure about 90 for the part. If they do the work right I'd say you're paying an average price for repair based on a high labor.

Looks like the guys/ gals here on PZ have given you plently to consider, but also consider labor costs. It's ball park but most shops/ garages not dealers charge anywhere from $60 to around $80 an hour for labor. Like you said you are not that mechanically incline so the costs your talking about seem fair. Parts for this car are not cheap by any means. Good luck and keep searching this site as there are many DIY's on ways to clean and repair things on the 5th Gen.

Re: Opinions Please! Repair Costs?

With the ability to exert force on a wrench to make it turn in 90 degree increments, it could have cost much, much less.

Just sayin'...

True, but I don't know where to apply the wrench.
