CEL - EGR Flow Insufficient P0401

Got a new check engine light today after I did my oil change and spark plugs. My OBD2 reader showed two codes. "P0401" and "P0401 P" not sure what that means. What should I do? Clean my EGR valve? Replace it?

Re: CEL - EGR Flow Insufficient P0401

when i had that problem i had to clean the egr ports. just cleaning the valve just resulted in the light going off for a few days then coming back on over and over again.

i just cleaned mine for the heak of it... i also had a little bit of surging on the motor and that went away... but if anything do it for the hell of it it only takes a little bit of time.. $1.. for a gasket or $200 for the valve.. just get some b-12 or something to help desolve the carbon..

try taking off and cleaning the valve first and if the code persists then clean the ports.

x2. There are write-ups on all of this just google it because they are on different prelude forums.

If you end up having to do your ports the write-up I liked best was the one that showed you how to make your own slide-hammer w/ home depot parts. Drilling threads into the ports plugs and using the threaded rod made it hella easy.

Here it is: DIY Slide hammer for EGR port cleaning w/ pics - Preludepower.com

Re: CEL - EGR Flow Insufficient P0401

just replaced my valve too seeing if CEL comes back on, thinking cleaning ports with a brush would just loosen carbon off to plug new valve?

Re: CEL - EGR Flow Insufficient P0401

This could be why my engine is blowing all that black smoke in the rear of my car. I'll clean it out and I'm going to be running some sea foam throughout my car to see how it is. I erased the code today though and it seemed that it hasn't came back yet...

Re: CEL - EGR Flow Insufficient P0401

Take off the egr valve and dump a bunch of seafoam or carb cleaner in the hole that goes to the intake mani

this is an option too. i went this route when the actual egr valve went bad. I couldnt justify spending $200+ on a new one when i most likely was going to ditch it later. Although if you live in a state with emissions then this might not work to well for you.

Re: CEL - EGR Flow Insufficient P0401

I live in Ottawa so we do emissions every 2 year. I'll fail etest right way without the EGR. I'll even fail it if it's bad.

switch over to obd1 (p28 or p72 ecu) those are jyst the names of the main engine computer.. or the ecu "engine control unit" (ithink)
although if you have to do emissions at all you cant do this
