Icon9 Returning the prelude i bought. yay or nay?

ok, so i bought my 98 prelude base for 5,564 from a dealer. had to buy tires and a cat for ti. spent over 600 for those. the car leaks water in my trunk etc, its been in a fender dmg and repainted. meh job, front n rear bumpers arent aligned, i dont know what else other probs there are. basically im gonna lose out 1200+ if i return the car. dealer is gonna buy back for 4990 for the sticker price... any suggestions? inputs? im having a hard time deciding here. :/ is it worth keeping or should i just return it???

Re: Returning the prelude i bought. yay or nay?

id say keep it , the trunk leak is prob the tail light seals there like $40
align the bumpers and good to go, i mean you didnt buy a brand new car , but take the time fix a few small things and then build from there there a great car and fun to drive, and look you have all ready spent 600 on tires and cat thats a good start

Keep it and baby it !

well it cant be that bad. pics? when you buy a used car 12-13 years old dont expect **** to be new even if its a honda u gotta replace things overtime. if the engine and tranny aint giving u issues what else can u ask for?

Its a 5spd the engine seems fine, dealer said its a new tranny, hard to get into first sometimes though.I'm not sure if ther's any frame dmg. I asked my dad for adviced n he said he would have never bought the. Car for the price. N that I would never get back what I paid for. But I knew that... I'll see if I can post pics tonight. May return it tomorrow. So all this feed back helps.

Re: Returning the prelude i bought. yay or nay?

Honestly if you have to bite 1200 just to take it back I'd keep it. For that much you can get the fender repainted if you so desire. Trunk leaking is more than likely the taillight gaskets, which was posted above as a $40 fix. That person would be wrong. Its at max a $20 fix, suuuuper easy DIY. Same goes for the bumpers. Our cars are known for a little bit of bumper sag. You can easily fix this yourself or a body shop could probably handle it for you well within your 1200 budget. If the engine and tranny are good I'd say keep it. Being used you will have to replace certain things, but since you bought it from a dealer (assuming its a honda dealership) you should have at least a 1 year limited warranty. Check with them on the specifics, become learned and use it if you have to. Honda dealers are required to check certain things before they sell a car, find out what those are and if theres an issue with that in the immediate future, jump on their balls about it.

Pics would help us determine just how bad off you are, but honestly unless its absolutely horrid I'd be willing to bet that the car is more than worth keeping, especially if that means not wasting $1200...

EDIT: Just remembered you mentioning first gear. Thats normal, and by normal I think for most hondas. As I drove a buddy of mines 07 civic when he bought it new and his 1st gear did the same as mine. Anyway, to the point. Assuming your under 10mph( or whatever the number is to shift into first, prolly closer to 3mph...) first can be a bitch every now and again. For me, instead of trying to force it in, I just apply the normal pressure I would to normally shift and slowly let the clutch out and just as the clutch catches it should slide right in. Dont know why it is but my friends civic did the same thing brand new off the lot...

You could take it down to a honda dealership and ask them very nicely to run your cars vin through their system to see what maintenance has been done through the dealership, and ask if they would be so kind as to give your car a good look over. Good techs can spot certain things that let them know whether or not certain things, like a timing belt and such, have been serviced recently. If you let them know that you just bought the car and are trying to decide whether to keep it, chances are they'll help you out in hopes of gaining a new return customer...unless they are all dicks, its seems to be hit or miss, but same can be said of any stealership...

look into the lemon law....if that doesnt work for you and if the car is a worthless POS, i would cut my losses and get as much as i can back out of it by returning it.

Re: Returning the prelude i bought. yay or nay?

keep it! really you already fixed the tail light leaks, bought tires for it, and a new cat, the bumpers are an easy fix wit a lil patiance, and honestly unless the fender really bugs you, i couldnt really see anything wrong with it. you already bought it save some money and put into it, really make it your car and make it a fun car to drive. done deal.

The one I just got is in worse condition. Good to hear that you kept it. Funny thing is, my wife paid $5,400 for mine and it's a 99 white Type SH. How many miles you got on yours?

The car looks great from what I see. I had the same problem with my trunk leaking it ended up being the tailight seals. Enjoy your Prelude thats not enough problems to wanna get rid of it..

Re: Returning the prelude i bought. yay or nay?

keep it. the passengers side fender is aftermarket and fits terribly. the hood and bumper cover are likely after market as well but can be tweaked with ease. the headlight can be adjusted as well.

looks like you have an apexi exhuast, which is good stuff. The car looks to be in good shape for what you paid for it. I'll link you to the tail light gaskets, they'll be less than $15 shipped if I'm not mistaken. any parts you need for your car, you can also find on the site I'll link.

Good luck with your prelude, you made a great choice.
