Opinion on Exhaust

My stock exhaust is a piece of crap and the previous owner widen the pipe but left the muffler and everything else same size and it sounds like there's a leak somewhere so I'll be needing a new catback exhaust system now (just replaced a highflow cat)

What are your recommendations? I've never actually heard too many I4 with exhausts (Not to many rice rockets around here... They all have I6/V6 or V8 baller cars) so I'm looking for something not too raspy and loud. I've been suggested the Mugen Twinloop but that's too expensive for my budget. How are Greddy's or Apexi? Any other suggestions?

How about th resonator? I was told to keep that on or add one so it doesn't sound loud and raspy.

put on an aftermarket resonator. i heard the glasspack ones sound good but you need to replace them over time. but then again it only cost about $20

How much are you looking to spend?

I always say the apexi ws2 full cat back but it is in the $500 range.

Re: Opinion on Exhaust

I think you're going to have to have to hear them for yourself before dumping over $500.00 into an exhaust system that you thought you might like based off of someone else's opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder you know.

Also I am not discrediting anything anyone has suggested already in this thread in any way. I am merely suggesting that you go out and listen for yourself before making a purchase that you're not fully on board with causing you to regret that decision later on and being out of the money spent.

Re: Opinion on Exhaust

I really want to. Problem is rarely anyone has an exhaust system on their inline 4. I've watched multple youtube videos but I highly doubt that is the actual sound in person. My friend has a Greddy exhaust but it's on his Inline 6 IS300 and that sounds really nice.

Re: Opinion on Exhaust

back when i had my lude, i had the Apexi WS2. I was deciding between the NiOR and the WS2 but not much of a difference besides the color and the tip. I personally wanted something that was quiet when idle and a nice bass sound but not ricy when on the throttle. so i ended up with the WS2, and i also got the AEM V2 which both together sounded good. i didnt really notice a gain though.

thats just my experience, i did spend a month or so researching and even finding the best place to buy it. theres a thread somewhere on this site that has video clips of preludes with different exhausts. youll get what you want in the end, its your lude and your money. if i was you though, take your time and find local luders who have aftermarket exhausts and check them out. just remember, try not to cheap out too much or you will end up paying for it in the end...most of the time.

Re: Opinion on Exhaust

The ws2 is a good exhaust but if you dont feel like getting on the apexi 'wagon' get a custom exhaust made up with a vibrant muffler and resonator.

I've been hearing a lot about these Vibrant mufflers and I want to know more. I have read about them and listened to others that have them on how much they like them. I would like to know more about the gains and the sound they produce. I will get my butt down to San Diego soon enough to hear SI Speeds car, that should give me an idea..

That's the same thing I keep hearing as well. Please post a review once you get one installed HypnoFish, I am interested in your findings.

I will corroborate this. I recently installed a custom 2.5" exhaust (header back, mandrel bends) and I went with a Vibrant muffler and couldn't be happier.

I'm going to post up a couple vids but for perspective you need to know more about the exhaust to know why it sounds like it does. Every component in the exhaust will affect the overall sound so it would be rude of me to just say here is a vibrant muffler and toss up a vid and not explain the setup.

Tri-y (Hytech style) header w/ 2.5" collector
Vibrant Muffler 2.5" (black)
2.5"x8" flexpipe from ebay
Magnaflow Round Spun Metallic Cat (#59926)
My only local custom exhaust shop didn't to mandrel bends so I got 2 90 degree 2.5" SS bends from autozone and the shop used them with their 2.5" SS piping (just random advice for anyone in the same situation)
No resonator (so ya, it's loud)

Here it is with a light merge on the interstate, windows up:

Here it is on the start-up:

I guess you could consider my videos to be an "exaggerated" version of their muffler since I have a heavily modified, free-flowing exhaust.

One more point I want to make: The OP said "previous owner widen the pipe but left the muffler and everything else same size" which means he may have installed 2.5" piping? If he did does apexi make a 2.5" ws2 exhaust for the prelude? If I'm not mistaking the OP might just be able to buy a apexi ws2 muffler for an integra or something else to get the 2.5" inlet he may or may not need.

Re: Opinion on Exhaust

What I ment was the previous owner welded on a piece of 2.5 inch pipe to make it sound louder, but I was able to fit a stock sized cat and it had the stock muffler. Either way, it sounds like crap.

I might be interested but money is tight as my front end is torn apart so my bumper has to be replaced. I'll be able to cross to USA as it's only 50 minutes from Ottawa.
