Just bought a 98 Auto

First time poster...

I just drove home from Miami in my 98 Prelude and on the drive home I was evaluating the things that need some TLC. I'm hoping you guys can give me feedback on just how expensive certain projects are and any other information you can share. Also, I haven't had a chance to actually investigate anything as it's been a long day, and I'm headed to be after I write this.

Some minor issues:
1) Exhaust leak about 3 inches from the muffler. I'm assuming a cheap and easy fix at any muffler shop.

2) Wiper squirter's aren't squirting, but it seems like liquid is shooting out somewhere under the hood.

3) Window motors seem sluggish.

4) Sliding moonroof seems to need some kind of lubrication, any suggestions as to what kind?

5) The front speakers are MIA, the larger ones on the bottom of the doors. What size are the replacements?

Major issue:
1) There seems to be a sluggish transition from first to second gear, the others seem fine. Is this "slipping?" Is it the beginning of the end of this transmission? How ridiculously expensive are they to rebuild or replace? When I was test driving it and for a 3 hour drive home I didn't notice it once. It wasn't until I let it sit for 3 hours, while I watched football at Buffalo Wild Wings, and fired it up to drive home that I noticed it.

Positives:
The engine seems to be running smoothly, although the loud exhaust leak and iffy transmission seam to be a pretty big distraction.

Bottom line, did I get hosed? I paid 4grand for it.

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Just bought a 98 Auto

you need new tubing for your window washer fluid. easy fix.
the exhaust leak should be an easy fix at a muffler shop as well.

window motors get sluggish as they get old. the windows in 5th gens tend to get out of adjustment over time, any good glass guy will know how to straighten them out when you replace the motors. try cleaning out the tracks for the moonroof, and use some white lithium grease spray to keep things moving smooth.

the auto trans is a time bomb. start collecting parts for a 5 speed swap, it's only a matter of time before that thing bites it. there are tons of threads on 5 speed swap on this site, do some searching.

Re: Just bought a 98 Auto

I knew the 5 speed swap suggestion would make its appearance. Glad I didn't have to say it.

Protip - before replacing your window motors, spray the rubber sealers at the bottom with silicone grease. (the rubber at the bottom of the window that seals inside and outside...you know what I mean) My prelude and my buddies had the same problem. The window would move but it would move slowly and shake and shudder a bit. I sprayed mine with silicone, he did not. His window motor died, mine works fine.

Spray the inside of the tracks, where it touches the window and let it sit for a bit. Then run the window up and down a couple times. A lot of times the rubber just gets all dry and drags on the window, which will kill the motor eventually.

Re: Just bought a 98 Auto

Time is only ticking on your transmission.

Sell it before its too late and buy a 5sp or a different car or do a 5sp swap.
