97 Prelude Knocking Sound

Attached is a zipped mp3 of the knocking sound that is coming from our 97 Prelude. Can anyone here advise as to what type of problem this sound is indicating? For the record; oil and radiator leaks have led to the engine being abused somewhat over the past year. That is, the car has been driven when the oil was very low and also with the coolant very low so that the engine overheated. I was thinking a simple problem with the valves, but driving now, the engine does not sound so good and I do not want to drive it thinking that the worst is about to happen.

Thanks for listening.

Re: 97 Prelude Knocking Sound

So I have quit driving until knocking can be repaired. I have access to an auto hobby shop and so I sought the opinion from a great mechanic who runs it who has worked there for 40 years. That the knocking is from a rod is really quite easy to hear (versus a lifter), but isolation is something else entirely. A stethoscope clearly indicated noise from the oil pan, so I am going to replace the lower rod bearings. Apparently this job can be done easily by a DIYer. Any advice on this job would be appreciated.

I should not have used the word easily in the above sentence. I understand the potential for headaches when it comes to any job, that is why I am asking for any advice anyone may have.

Not sure, but I think when the engine is run low on oil and also overheated that your looking at alot of wear. I had a 3rd Gen I got off a guy who ran his low on oil and overheating and he ended up breaking the rod on # 2 and sending it thru the front of the motor behind the exhaust manifold. I bought the car off him for $60 and found another B21A1 shipped for $400.
